I am not sure if I remember it correctly, but if you hold the mouse1 button pressed, it should cycle through different possible selections and thus allow to select the first one.

But you are right, it is a bug that it doesn't select the first plane when clicking once, but maybe that Bug was fixed in Hammer 3.5 (don't remember).

I cannot reproduce your problem with VHE 3.4 Build 1983 (the current one from the Half-Life SDK from the Steam Library). My system specs

I tried the Select tool (which supports cycling the selection as said) and the Texture Application Tool (Shift+A, doesn't support cycling through faces) and both select the first object / face visible in the 3d camera view.

Am I doing s.th. wrong or different from you? Maybe I didn't understand you correctly, what are you doing to select a face?

I believe you, since I also remember this problem from earlier Hammer versions. But I cannot reproduce it with the Hammer version named above.

Here is the test file I used to do what you did, it works fine for me: http://dominik.matrixstorm.com/test_rmf.zip (I am aware that this is not a valid map, same as yours.)

Please try if that file has the problem for you or not, also would be cool if you could upload an example rmf that has the problem for you somewhere (i.e. multiupload.nl).
