I can confirm this issue on 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04.
Using pulseaudio, I get no sound whatsoever. EDIT: Turns out the whole problem with pulseaudio is that source engine games set their volume to 0 when you start them for the first time (no seriously, that's the whole problem). Switching workspaces out of the app, then going to sound settings and turning the application's volume up to max fixes it.
Using ALSA, I get sound effects but no music, voices are played comically fast, and the game freezes when quitting and needs to be pkill'd.
These results are the same whether I launch from the terminal or from steam.
Closing due to age. Please reopen / create a new issue if this still occurs with the 25th anniversary update (December 2023 Steam build) on a current Linux distribution.
I use Alsa/kmix and when running Steam with:
SDL_AUDIODRIVER=alsa AUDIODEV=hw:0,0
When running Half-Life the NPC voices sound sped up and i can't make out what they are saying.
