[Feature Request] Improve translations #2311

Hi. Can you improve the translations in the game? In Russian a lot of information is in English, it should be translated. I suppose the community should be the one to help improve the translations. So is there any way to help with this?

These are only two examples from Settings. There is more that should be translated in the game such a message when you try to drop the knife.

French also has missing localization but only for the stuff that were added post-SteamPipe update back in 2013 (raw mouse input, low video quality...)

@kisak-valve You can remove the Counter-Strike label because this issue seems to be common to all games, I tested with both Counter-Strike and Half-Life 1.

@eat1k You can remove the [CS] tag in the title as well.

If people would like to provide translations for the languages missing I’d be happy to integrate them into a release. When I have time I’ll diff the English and other localization files and get a list of what is missing.

@mikela-valve UI changes needs to be made in order to fix certain localization strings because they are getting cut when displayed on client. (Spanish translation are way more larger than English one)

I will be waiting on commits to start doing pull request on localization files.

@mikela-valve Can this thread be extended not only to Half-Life, but also for HL: Opposing Force and HL: Blueshift? For example, the retail versions had full Spanish texts and dubs, yet they don't appear in Steam ( I think Spanish was added to OF after Steampipe, but it is half broken ).

For some of these that you suggested: Cstrike_Reset_View -> Восстановить вид (another option that I suggest) Cstrike_Nightvision -> Вкл/выкл. ночное видение (just added a . after выкл) Cstrike_Drop_Weapon -> I think the first option is good, i.e, Выбросить текущее оружие Cstrike_Select_Team -> I think the second option is good, i.e, Выбрать команду Cstrike_RadarType -> the last option is good. Cstrike_Solid -> maybe just an antonym of transparent? If you suggested in Cstrike_Transparent Прозрачный I think in Cstrike_Solid we can write Непрозрачный (literally "not transparent")

Looking at the Russian translation, it looks like most of those have translations. Are they present in your files? If not they may not be shipped for some reason, this is what I have for some of them: Cstrike_Reset_View -> Восстановить вид Cstrike_Buy_Menu -> Меню Купить Cstrike_Fire -> Огонь Cstrike_Nightvision -> Включить/выключить прибор ночного видения Cstrike_Drop_Weapon -> Бросить текущее оружие Cstrike_Select_Team -> Выбрать команду

I don't have cstrike_russian folder in Half-Life, but yes valve_russian. I don't know why.

@mikela-valve That's normal, the engine loads both resource/valve_language.txt and resource/game_language.txt when the game is not valve in CBaseUI::Start.

The CS depot uses the valve_ version: https://steamdb.info/depot/141/ The Russian depot for CS specifically has no files: https://steamdb.info/depot/142/

But depots for other languages do, for example: https://steamdb.info/depot/19/

It looks like it's an inconsistency in the filenames for different translations. Not sure if it needs fixing.

Cstrike_Reset_View -> Восстановить вид (another option that I suggest)

Это force_centerview, сбрасывает viewangles на начальные позиции. Слово вид вряд-ли здесь подойдет. image

@mikela-valve there no translation's files in cstrike/res dir, and this is strange. image

Cstrike_Reset_View -> Восстановить вид

вид in english like view, but in russian like view from some point, but force_centreview set viewangles to null, maybe we should change вид -> взгляд, взгляд in russian like view angles.

@SamVanheer Ok, that explains everything. I hadn't checked the depot so I didn't know that there weren't any CS localization files shipped for Russian.

It looks like possibly the Russian translation for CS wasn't fully completed so it was never shipped. I have a string localization file for it which is what I drew those translations from but that is all.

This is what I have, if anyone would like to go through it to make corrections or updates. It's missing the new tokens that I added for the scoreboard that I've listed below but other looks to be complete.

@basuritashka I think the newest Spanish translations I have are already distributed with CS and I presume it's the same for other games, so if there are still untranslated things in the Spanish localization then those still need to be updated.

I actually don't know how to better translate D. Kit in scoreboard. The translate of Defuse Kit is Набор сапёра but it looks strange (640x480):

For Cstrike_ACCOUNT I suggest Деньги I think it's better to let the Cstrike_HEALTH as in English: HP. Or we can put Жизни (literally lifes). That's how it looks: (640x480) image

Or Здоровье (literally health) image

I think Противо-террористическое подразделение translate is too large. So I suggest changing it to Спецназ:

Moreover, why there is a space after the text in each Russian translation in this file?

@basuritashka Got it. Those strings are only English so far as they were only added recently by me so I'd definitely appreciate translations of them for any of the languages that are already supported.

@eat1k Is there any abbreviation of Набор сапёра that makes sense the way D. Kit does? I could extend the width of that column but any changes to field size are at the expense of the name column so it's best if it can be kept the same.

I noticed those spaces as well and I have no idea why they're there. They may be stripped automatically when the string is loaded so they're not noticeable in game but I don't have any clue why it's like that, especially since the English strings don't have spaces.

I found a good short translation for D. Kit: Дефуз. Has anyone other suggestions?

@mikela-valve We were testing a few weeks ago about that blank space on certain strings and they are indeed working. Probably it was used to make the string fit correctly into the UI.

@mikela-valve seem's like you should create few issues for every lang. Coz there some stupid ideas for translate.

Maybe just щипцы? But in tab better stay D. Kit coz everyone know's what is it.

Слово спецназ очень сложно найти в какой-нибудь сборке нормальной, это всегда было Контр-террорист.

Вообще, по хорошему, берите CS:GO и смотрите перевод там. Ну и лучше создать отдельный issue для нашего языка, так как он сложноват в отличии от остальных.

Awesome, thanks @afwn90cj93201nixr2e1re! I'm not sure if all of the languages necessarily need their own issue threads since some of them have significantly less than others, but definitely languages where we don't currently even ship localizations for certain games like CS Russian you can definitely feel free to create a new issue to track work on it.

Also motd.txt is outdated, contains a text that says you're playing CS 1.5, it isn't used but still, the message that is using doesn't says that the version of the game is 1.6 (As the english version does)

@basuritashka It looks like all of the strings in CS are accounted for, minus the ones I recently added. I created a gist of all of the strings I could find that were not localized in the Spanish files.

Of course you can feel free to suggest improvements to any of the translations already existing as well. Also, the gist only includes strings that were absent from the Spanish localization, it doesn't include any that are present but have English text for their Spanish translation.

Thanks, I would like to ask if STS Steam Translation Server keep working on games like DOD/CS 1.6/HL/GoldSRC or they are just working on new content from actual games.

Not that I know of so I would assume not, at least I haven't seen any updates to any of the localizations for the past several years.

there 3 plural rules in ru. 1 - игрок, 2..3 - игрока, 5..20 игроков, 21 - игрок.
