This is a regression from previous versions of Half-Life. I tested the original Uplink demo build and the soda machine was fully rendered at all times in software mode.
Looks like the Ladders are specifically Z-fighting.
When using the Software renderer, parts of certain objects will render incorrectly. This commonly occurs when the player is far away from these objects. The soda machine in Uplink and ladders in crossfire are the examples provided here.
