(proposal) Add to favorites by domain #823

Please, add the ability to add servers to favorite on the domain, and not just the ip.

this would be really great since sometimes people change hosting companies for their servers and by doing that they lose almost all the people who added their old server to the favorites because it's stored as IP:PORT and not DNS:PORT by adding DNS support will be very benefic for server owners/administrators but also for players because they keep their favorite servers even if they are not up to date with the latest news about the servers they added to favs, like migrating to other game server host i hope it gets implemented very soon

i would say that this request needs another title because people don't know what they are missing , especially server administrators/owners

Strongly support. Have seen many communities lose players who simply cant find an old server if it moved while they were inactive for a few months with work or family issues. And the favourites list in general could do with some love. Has hardly changed since the release of steam.

This already works. Try for instance to add to favorites ZombiMod.Com:27017.

And yes, Valve doesn't give a shit about their clients.

it doesn't work ...or at least you don't understand what the OP means when you add a server to your favorites it will save it as IP:PORT even if you've used game.server.com:27017 to add it ... not DNS:PORT, just edit the serverbrowser.vdf with notepad and look for yourself

While it's a good idea, I can't see this happening any time soon because this tracker is mostly for game-breaking bugs (it's dropped to low-priority). That being said, (I haven't checked), is this feature implemented in newer games? If not, recommending it for newer titles and suggesting gold-src games receive the update as well might be the best bet.

EDIT: Sorry about the multi-post. The page didn't update after posting.

Steam infrastructure and TF2 now support adding a game to favourites by the Game Server Steam ID, which can be carried over across IP addresses and port numbers. Other games could be updated to support it (Valve just need to implement it per-game) and third-party games would need a Steamworks update first.
