Unable to load voice codec 'vaudio_speex'. Voice disabled. #226

In game voice is not working with the following ,

Unable to load voice codec 'vaudio_speex'. Voice disabled.

This appears to be because there is no vaudio_speex.so in Portal 2/bin ? My Counter-Strike Source install has a copy of this library in the bin folder, but copying it over does not work because of some missing symbols (i.e. their not the same).

I have checked integrity and also deleted and redownloaded the whole game but no change.

This came about because friend (on Windows) and I were trying to play co-op but could not get voice communication to work. Mine is disabled in Portal 2 with the above, but his is locked to Portal 2. Therefore we can't use Steam chat either.

I can confirm this annoyance is real. Voice chat via Portal's push-to-talk hasn't worked (Linux-Windows and Linux-Linux) since beta.

I have the same issue. Installing various speex libraries from package manager didn't help. As the OP said steam-chat doesn't work either (Linux-Windows).

I hope it gets fixed soon. steam system info: https://gist.github.com/ntasos/6ad50023cc4a53b0929e

Same issue probably (haven't seen the error message yet - does it appear in the in-game console?) Ubuntu 12.04 <-> Windows buddy

wilin commented 9 years ago

The error message has been gone for a while now (it showed in the in-game console upon game start). Voice chat unfortunately still doesn't work (Ubuntu 14.04 - Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 14.04 - Windows 7).

So this is common issue (I thought that perhaps some old libs in Ubuntu 12.04 make this, but it seems now nothing is changed in 14.04 either)

Found this shortly after sending a support ticket. :slightly_frowning_face:

Would be nice to have some warning or error that voice is being disabled, so people don't waste time chasing ghosts.
