[HL1][Feature Request] Add an option to adjust FOV #1434

Currently their is no option to adjust FOV in-game. The default FOV is too low for widescreen monitors (it gives me a headache). It would be nice if it was adjustable (like in TF2)

alfred-valve commented 11 years ago

FOV changing is considered a cheat right now (as it enables more of the scene to be viewed), so this will take some work to do properly.

bootkiller commented 11 years ago

This also applies to other Valve games, the FOV slider option was only introduced with the Orange Box games if I recall correctly. CS:Source also doesn't have a FOV slider.

AnAkkk commented 11 years ago

I think most Valve games already default to FOV 90. TF2 default used to be 75, and people complained and wanted it higher, which is why the slider was added. I think HL1 FOV is already 90 though. However, an option to set it higher might be a good idea.

thegreatprophetzarquon commented 11 years ago

The default fov is 90, but it actually is effectively lower. To get true 90 fov you need to set it to around 100. (see: http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Half-Life#Field_of_view)

thegreatprophetzarquon commented 11 years ago

@alfred-valve: I don't think it is a cheat in half-life. (I can adjust the fov by editing the config files, but then again I don't really play multiplayer.) It's probably a cheat in Counter-Strike.

Dasani commented 11 years ago

Would it be possible for the FOV to be automatically set if the user selects a wide screen resolution? That way the default_fov command isn't messed around with. I've been hoping for proper FOV in CS for a while now. Looks right in CS:S but 1.6 is zoomed in.

fov 90 in counter strike is gameplay thing, and it is not good idea to change it

Tele42 commented 11 years ago

it does not really matter what it is set to as long as it the same for all player on the server, why not shelve this issue for a week and take a survey of counterstrike players asking if they want 75, 90, or 100?

r3n4m3 commented 11 years ago

It is not quake or UT, that game does not need to see everything around, cuz that is a gameplay thing. U only see what urs eyes need to see, if u need to see more, u should moving ur mouse and look around.

Tele42 commented 11 years ago

@r3n4m3, with that mentality, then counterstrike should be letter boxed to 4:3 because wide screen monitors did not exist when the game was made. Everything must be exactly the same as the current non-beta and there is no room for improvement since the game was perfect in every way (except it only ran on windows).

r3n4m3 commented 11 years ago

they then existed, and everyone knew about them, and know that their time will come. but we use 90 Why in Half Life 2 at FullHD (16:9) i use fov 90, and that is enough?

AnAkkk commented 11 years ago

In Source engine games, the "real" FOV is not 90, it depends of the aspect ratio that you set. You could get 130 with multiple screens. The problem is that it gives an advantage to people that got wider/more screens. It looks like this is not the case in HL1/CS though, and I'm not sure it's a good idea to do that as well. If you're going to do that though, I guess you should allow people to set the FOV they want, so everybody would be equal.

r3n4m3 commented 11 years ago

i think blocking would be most good then give a freedom to set every FOV

thegreatprophetzarquon commented 11 years ago

If there is issues with allowing the changing of fov (And I can see how their would be in CS), then maybe the option to change fov could be limited to single player games, with multiplayer fov being locked.

Dasani commented 11 years ago

I find nothing wrong with this game evolving for the times. We live in widescreen land now so proper FOV is a must. Choosing 16:9 lops of some of the top and bottom of the screen so if anything anyone using a 4:3 resolution is the one with the advantage. I hope this is considered for 1.6 as it is more of a needed feature than anything else.

AnAkkk commented 11 years ago

I don't see how seeing more/less vertically makes any real difference, unless you are playing on a map that got some high places or something. You gain more advantage with horizontal fov.

LevShisterov commented 11 years ago

@alfred-valve: Most of all HLDM Pro players use fov higher then 90, like 100, 110 and even 120. Please don't forget about them and don't lock fov for half-life.
