I have exactly the same problem. For the record, I just opted into steampipe beta. I didn't launch the game after last couple of updates, so I can't say if the problem occured without steampipe. My system differs from tombstar's quite a lot, so I'm enclosing its summary:

I can't get passed the MOTD, either. Don't know if it's just Pinion or all MOTDs. I upgraded to Steampipe on Monday, and was able to connect to one of the few Steampipe servers just fine. But after the 4/24 patch (which apparently enabled compatibility with non-Steampipe servers), it crashes when trying to dismiss the MOTD.

Been affecting me since joining the Steampipe TF2 beta as well (on both of my desktops). It happens some arbitrary percentage of the time (more than half). Sometimes I am able to get past the welcome screen, but most attempts result in the crash.
Machine 1:
Machine 2:
It only happens to me on Skial's Dustbowl NY + for some reason, other servers I join I don't crash on.
Really odd.
Ubuntu 13.04, Nvidia GeForce 220 GT, 313.xx drivers from the software updates, 4GB RAM, Q6600 C2Q
TF2 has been rock stable on my system, fully updated and played everyday. Today I upgraded to steampipe beta, and now the game crashes as described above. The upgrade to Steam pipe was the only change in my system.
The problem does not occur on official Valve servers, nor on GameArena servers. GamersUN works, although the custom loading screens/advertisements do not. The problem occurs every single time on games.on.net and Ozzyfurocity.
Mint 14, Gnome 3, 2500k, GTX570SOC, HyperX SSD, proprietary graphics drivers.
For anyone with the recent SteamPipe beta and experiencing crashes, could you run steam from a terminal, load tf2 and then provide this output with the crash id:
Finished uploading minidump (out-of-process): success = yes
response: CrashID=
I was getting an error saying it couldn't upload the dump, disabling a local proxy I had running and then a complete system restart fixed the proxy issue. Here is the resulting crash ID.

I too have this problem. Here is the CrashID. I just opted in to the TF2 beta again, since last time I had problems joining servers.

Since all the errors seemed to be texture format errors, and texture formats are driver dependent, I decided to upgrade everything and see if it helped. I was on 304, upgraded to 313 from the NVIDIA site, which broke my pc, then, back to the 310 experimental, which is at least working. I also installed hundreds of updates, updating every conceivable library, service and app, in the hope that maybe something would make any difference. The updates did nothing,
Pipe has been fun, I recorded a load time of 6 seconds at one stage, and load times never exceeded 15 seconds. However, at this point it is crashing on initial server load 90% of the time for me, and crashing on every other level change. I will be regressing out of the pipe beta, sorry. Good luck, I sincerely hope to try pipe again when it works. :)
Good luck with that; It stopped being a beta today. Now it's the mainstream.

WHAT?!? How could they possibly release something that segfaults 90% of the time? Is it only Linux users who are having this problem? I wonder if this is happening on Steamboxes?
I have heard that a complete reinstall might help, can we get any official comment on whether that might be the case? I don't mean to sound harsh, but 10GB+ is a lot of downloading, in some places that kinda traffic constitutes a significant monetary investment. But then I guess I was going to have to reinstall to opt out of the beta anyway.
Yes, this bug report only applies to the Linux client (or at least it doesn't affect the Windows client). I don't have any information suggesting that a reinstall helps with this issue; I've tried verifying my install and that did nothing.

I haven't read anything about a TF2 update being issued today. I know today they're supposed to roll out Steampipe for everyone, but maybe they're trying to iron out this bug before it's out. Which would be a very good thing.
After the update today (2013/04/30), I have been able to connect to two different servers running pl_badwater, with no crashes. If a few other people test this and confirm, I will mark this issue as closed.
This bug will be fixed in the update.
also, this is the wrong place to report this bug, which is why no one working on the games saw it... It should have been over in Source-1-Games ( https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Source-1-Games ). ...and who assigned this to Mike? He's not gonna look here for bugs.
In any case, no worries. Pretty sure this is fixed.
@bdeen-valve Thanks for fixing the issue. Sorry for posting it in the wrong tracker, but to avoid this in future, you need to update the README. Currently, it says:
If you encounter an issue while using Steam for Linux or with any of the available Linux games
I wasn't aware the other repositories existed, as this was the one I was linked to.
It appears to be working, sorry i ever doubted the gods of valve.
That it wasn’t closed and encouraged to the Source-1-Games repo is my fault, I had a few days of not being on the tracker. Unsure who reviewed it for mike though …

Same. I was busy doing my final exam (or relaxing thereafter); didn't even see this one pop up. I just figured Mike grabbed it when I finally went through it on Thursday.
Edit: Forgot to mention I am using the SteamPipe Beta. Did not experience the problem prior to opting in, and it existed before the TF2 update on 2013/04/24.
TF2 closes to desktop with no displayed error message or warning.
Expected: Display the team-selection page. Actual: Program closes to desktop.
This has happened three times of four tries to play the game (once yesterday, twice today after the update).
