Ubuntu's display drivers missing after installing TF2 #260

I installed steam in Ubuntu. It opened, and there was a popup that said steam couldn't find the right drivers for my system, which I ignored as the same thing usually happens when I run a source game in windows for the first time. I proceeded to download TF2. After this was completed, I attempted to launch the game, at which point steam crashed. I was unable to re-open steam. When I tried, it said that there was a missing executable. I tried re-installing steam, which didn't work, then uninstalling (which I couldn't do because steam wasn't showing up in the software center. I know no other way of doing this).

Finally, I gave up and shut down the computer. When I try to boot into Ubuntu (it is on a partition, alongside windows 8) it displays the purple start up screen, then the screen goes black, with the indicator lights all on steadily. I've tried letting it sit (at least a half hour), but nothing happens. Once, a window popped up and said that the display had no drivers, and offered to put the screen into a low resolution mode, which it failed to do. I have been unable to get this screen to reappear.

Windows 8 boots fine. Device info as follows:

I have since completely wiped my computer, and re installed both Ubuntu and Windows 8. I was able to install and run steam. However, Ubuntu has recently started booting into a grub console.

Thanks for the help, jljusten.

If you can start steam, then I think you should be able to go under the "Help" menu to select "System Information" which will then show various types of information about your system.

If you can't start steam, but you can get a terminal window to open, you might be able to provide more information about your system with these commands:

lspci | grep VGA and glxinfo

So, the first time you installed Ubuntu, then Steam, then TF2 which resulted in Ubuntu starting to boot, but failing to get into graphics mode?

And, the second time you installed Ubuntu, everything was running fine. (So, the first problem was not reproducible.) But, then at some point Ubuntu started failing to boot very early on during the grub boot loader. Do you know what lead up to this grub boot issue? Had you booted to Windows in between?

At any rate, it seems like the first issue potentially could have been an issue with the driver update process in steam, but if it didn't happen on your second install, then I might conclude that it was fixed by Valve.

But, for the second installation, it sounds more like a generic Ubuntu issue, and not related to Steam or Intel drivers. Perhaps searching the web for Ubuntu + Win8 might show if other users have difficulty dual booting?

Another question I have. When you mention that your install "is on a partition, alongside windows 8", do you mean it is in a separate partition from Win8? I think Ubuntu has a 'WUBI' install that installs within the same partition as Windows, and if you are using WUBI, then I might ask if WUBI is compatible with Win8.

I had not been aware that this is what WUBI did. I will remove Ubuntu and try using a disk to install it on a proper partition, and see if this will fix the problem. Thanks very much for your help!

@Argon747: It doesn't seem like Intel or Valve can take any action on this issue at this time, so I am going to close the issue for now. If you are able to reproduce the issue where your drivers get messed by changes that Steam makes to the system, can you re-open this issue? Thanks.
