Progress discrepancy in downloads screen #2635

I couldn't come up with a better way to describe it in one sentence. What happened was I renamed my /steamapps/common/Left 4 Dead Beta folder "Left 4 Dead" in the hopes that having most of the same files would speed the downloading of the current version along. It seems to have figured out that it only has to download some of the files, but the way it's being reported by the downloads screen is... well... just see for yourself.

downloading left 4 dead

It's showing how much I've downloaded so far, not counting the existing files... out of the total size of the game. The progress bar at the bottom is based on this figure as well. However, the estimated time remaining makes it clear that it's only downloading the couple hundred megs or so that I was still missing.

This is the first time I've started downloading a "fresh" copy over top of a "stale" one, so I don't know if this is common behavior or just some weird bug I'm experiencing. Here's my system info, if it helps:

It looks to be downloading all the files again, the small progress bar under play button does appear to be in error.

stevethepocket commented 10 years ago

This is still happening in the latest build, post-revamp:

progress bars

@johndrinkwater No, it only downloads the missing files; in this case it finished after downloading only about 150 megs and then changed to "1.2 GB / 1.2 GB".

Caught this in the Windows client as well, so it's a platform-independent issue:

steam derping its download meter yet again

This was after moving my files to another location, uninstalling, putting them back, and trying to reinstall. It stopped after downloading only about 250 megs.

The progress bar under the play button is the progress of applying an update to the local files, while the progress bar at the bottom is the amount downloaded from the steam cdn. The difference is especially obvious with PAYDAY 2 updates, where depending on your internet connection, a gig or so download can complete much faster than the patching process of 25+ GB that the game uses.
