Have you posted on the official forum on PA's website, lots of useful info there.

I appologize for the long time to reply, I'd been on vacation. Yes, I posted on the game forums, and it's an issue with a game library (so not steam related).

HOWEVER, I do feel that steam should show me an error if the game exits non-zero right away (which clearly means it failed to start). Should that be a separate issue?

Tele42 commented 10 years ago

@hobarrera You may get additional information to help you troubleshoot if you run steam in a terminal, then try to start the game. This sounds like you're missing a dependency.

WhyNotHugo commented 10 years ago

Yes, that's what I said in my former post; it's a game issue, not steam (not so much a missing dep, but rather, the game requires a very old version of a dep).

My question now is; shouldn't steam be a bit more "friendly" a warn me that the game exited non-zero in these sort of scenarios? Or should I open a separate issue for that?

Have you managed to find a solution for this, hobarrera? I'm experiencing the same problem.

WhyNotHugo commented 10 years ago

Yes, PA needed an older version of libcurl. I ended up using the non-steam version, since I don't know how to install libraries into game folders via steam (I made a package for arch, actually: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/pl/planetary-annihilation/PKGBUILD).

This is being tracked on their bug tool; would be worth reminding them its a relatively easy change to remove the breakage http://pa.lennardf1989.com/Tracker/index.php?do=details&task_id=1864
