Tele42 commented 8 years ago

This is probably related to #4504 or #4537.

gdrewb-valve commented 8 years ago

Yes, likely yet another instance of Steam runtime incompatibilities.

NoXPhasma commented 8 years ago

I can confirm this on Linux Mint 18 x64. Stable version works fine.

rafaelsoaresbr commented 8 years ago

I can confirm this on Arch Linux http://paste.ubuntu.com/20051661/

Chuckaluphagus commented 8 years ago

I'm having this problem as well, all of a sudden. Steam worked fine last night. I installed some system updates, now Steam won't run at all. Rebooted, tried a newer version of the graphics driver (Nvidia 367.35), no change. Not sure how to proceed.

Terminal output is posted at: https://gist.github.com/Chuckaluphagus/15e70cc7343acdd46c48083efd0351d2 .

I'm happy to provide any additional information if it will help.

Storm-Engineer commented 8 years ago

Not sure if same issue, but Steam worked yesterday, then after updating itself it stopped to work. I did a system upgrade to see if that fixes but no.

How do I start a game that is supposed to run without Steam and does so on Windows? They tell me go to game folder in Steam and just run it - that works on Windows but on Linux it will cry about not finding all kinds of dirs. This game should run without Steam, and I want to play! Please help!

Storm-Engineer commented 8 years ago

I just tried now and Steam started up, it seemed to work... then while I came here to report that it crashed, and now won't start again. So the issue persists, but it's weird that at first it started up. Here is the dump for that crash: https://www.dropbox.com/s/hd8v7xw5wgf2hi7/crash_20160721032114_1.dmp?dl=0

NolanSyKinsley commented 8 years ago

Have this same issue, did not install any updates. Went to bed last night, turned on my computer today, now steam just will not start at all. Had same segfault at line 713.

Solution suggested in #4561 resolved it for me, in my case being part of the terraria beta that no longer exists, deleting appmanifest_105600.acf in steamapps resolved it.

Storm-Engineer commented 8 years ago

Apparently my issue was #4561 - an issue caused with beta participations no longer existing.

NoXPhasma commented 8 years ago

Like @Storm-Engineer, it was the same for me. After I've opted out of all non existent betas, the Steam beta client works again.

GreatBigWhiteWorld commented 8 years ago

I deleted all .acf files under steamapps but the segment error didn't go away.

GreatBigWhiteWorld commented 8 years ago

Do we already have a solution or not?

Chuckaluphagus commented 8 years ago

GreatBigWhiteWorld, it sounds like whatever is causing your problems is not the same as the "beta .acf file" issue that was causing mine/ours. Has Steam support gotten back to you yet?

GreatBigWhiteWorld commented 8 years ago

@Chuckaluphagus Isn't it here where I get steam support? Otherwise where do I get their support?

gdrewb-valve commented 8 years ago

There's a Steam support organization that you can contact at https://support.steampowered.com/. However this is the right place to report problems with the Linux Steam client so you're covered. As for your problem since it doesn't appear to be the same as the beta participation problem it's not clear if there's a known workaround or not. The original comments about it being a Steam runtime incompatibility could be correct or possibly not, but the many issues open here have a number of things to try if you feel like it. You can also wait for a response from the port team, which they'll put here. That'll likely take some time.

wstephenson commented 8 years ago

Still an issue on openSUSE Tumbleweed 20160828.

GreatBigWhiteWorld commented 8 years ago

After two weeks I tried again launching steam, it updated 200MB of files and popped up the login window I successfully logged in and it didn't crash, but all my games showed not installed. I checked the folder that all the games sit right there.

I relaunched steam and it brings me back to this crash.

boombatower commented 8 years ago

Fixed in openSUSE Tumbleweed 20160924.

Mirppc commented 6 years ago

Two years later, this issue arises from the dead.

Having a similar issue on 42.3. here is a log.

andrejpodzimek commented 5 years ago

3 years later, this zombie issue still lives on ArchLinux.

Entellex commented 5 years ago

Still an issue.

Scapior commented 4 years ago

Got this issue after the recent full system (Arch + KDE, Nvidia GPU) update, and it was fixed by installing lib32-nvidia-utils package.

Mailaender commented 4 years ago

Do you happen to know which library exactly was needed?

mattgorle commented 3 years ago

This is still happening on Arch. It started during the last week.

I have tried the following:

but nothing improved.

If it's relevant, the last thing that I did when it was last working was to install ARK.

Log here: https://pastebin.com/0fUw5Hmc

Crash and assert dumps here: crash_dumps.zip

mattgorle commented 3 years ago

A full re-install worked.

This is pretty invasive and you'll have to set up steam and download all of your stuff again

And all is happy with the world again.

Very odd

kisak-valve commented 3 years ago

Hello @mattgorle, src/public/tier1/utlmemory.h (176) : Assertion Failed: 0 in your log hints that you encountered #7813, and not the issue reported here.

PixsaOJ commented 2 years ago

@andrejpodzimek This issue is still here, Manjaro. lib32-nvidia-utils might be 1 version off for now.
