Setting keyboard layout in SteamOS client does not affect USB keyboards #5188

Your system information

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

When using SteamOS and changing the keyboard layout in the client, this will only affect the on screen overlay keyboard. USB keyboards will always have US International layout and there does not appear to be a user friendly way to change that. On SteamOS only, it would make sense to change the USB keyboard layout as well in my opinion.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

This issue was reported on the SteamOS community on Steam: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamuniverse/discussions/1/1496741765143025641/

Referring to this discussion http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamuniverse/discussions/1/1496741765143025641/?tscn=1506517585 Some additional information:

I have installed SteamOS in english language using german keyboard layout (advance debian installer). However a connected USB Keyboard (Logitech K800) is always treated as US keyboard layout. Connecting an old keyboard using PS2 standard works fine. When switching from Big Picture mode to Desktop mode using Gnome 3 all applications inside Gnome work with german keyboard as supposed to be. Only the overlay keyboard works in german layout but not the connected one. I experienced this error also in other linux distributions (openSuse, CentOS). But I'm not that technically experienced to figure out exactly. Hope this can help.

thx

I'm experiencing the same almost problem, but on Steam Client on Ubuntu 18.04 (french and fresh install). In game, Steam always find a french layout whatever I setup into gnome settings
