Hello @bjb1959, you should contact Feral Interactive.

Does the game work when launched from the desktop client?

bjb1959 commented 6 years ago

it runs from the desktop client fine using NVIDIA 390.48 driver with Vulcan support. it is only big picture mode that breaks it. Feral does not support the steam link which uses big picture mode. The game won't play on either big picture from the desktop or steam link but works fine on the client.

The game was developed on the 396 driver. You might want to try that.

bjb1959 commented 6 years ago

I did, unfortunately with the 396.18 driver the game crashes after a few seconds and forces me to reboot my machine so that is a no go at this point.

Let me clarify crashes. If I try playing the game on my PC using Big Picture Mode I get a black screen and nothing else happens. I am also not able to get to my desktop or use alt+F2 to killall or start another app etc and have to reboot to get my desktop back.

I came here because I also have issues with Steam Link and RoTR. I reported the issue to FeralInteractive but had no reply.

So, the game works fine for me in big picture or standard mode as long as I play on the PC. I absolutely had to run the 396 driver, it would not run with 390.

The issue I have is that if I stream to my TV with Steam Link the display is black. I have since figured that if I leave all 3 of my monitors turned on, and not in standby or disabled from the display settings then it works, but this isn't feasible for gaming on the TV.

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 upgraded from 16.04, and I installed the proprietary Nvidia driver 396 by dropping to a TTY, killing gdm, and installing the Nvidia driver from the .bin from Nvidia site.

The thing to note, from my experimentation is that it seems the black picture is related to window focus or something similar. If I perform the controller equivalent of an Alt+TAB on my TV I can get the image to show a single frame of the game, but it will remain frozen while the game continues on the PC. I can still control it from the TV and hear the sound but the picture does not update. Every time I Alt+TAB to the desktop and back it'll give me a new frame.

When I exit the game, I'm back to the desktop, on my TV and not Steam Big Picture (reinforcing my belief their is a focus issue). Steam Big Picture is minimised and I have to focus it manually.

The game also works fine if it's windowed and not full screen, the desktop streams fine, as does the game in windowed mode. As soon as the game is full screen, the image stops updating, unless all of my monitors are turned on!

I have tried current and beta steam clients and steam link firmware, the behavior doesn't change. They're currently both on the latest release builds.

The ONLY thing that makes this work correctly is if all 3 monitors are on. 1 on and 2 in standby doesn't work, even if they don't show in the display settings, it doesn't seem to matter which is my primary monitor. 2 on and one in standby will get me a frozen picture but I see two side-by-side screens in steam link. I haven't tried physically removing their Display Port cables from the PC but I suspect it'll work in that case, but it's also not a practical solution to unplug my monitors every time I want to game on the TV.

It may or may not be worth noting that I have some of Feral's other games (Life is Strange, Deus Ex, Mad Max) and they all work just fine.

The game crashes almost every time if I start the game first and then "join" from the Steam Link". If I alt+tab on the desktop the game crashes often, but not always. By crash I mean the only way to kill it and re-access my machine is to CTRL+ALT+F2 to another TTY and kill -9 all game processes.

If there is further information I can supply to assist let me know.

I was finally able to get the game to play user 396 driver by playing on the PC in windowed mode instead of fullscreen. If fullscreen is turned on prior to starting the game I get a black screen, I can hear the game but not see it. If I turn on fullscreen once the game starts in windowed mode my computer freezes which leads me to believe it would freeze if I didn't get the black screen when starting in fullscreen mode. I have not tried on the steam link with the game set to windowed mode but will do that tonight to see if it works. I use gnome shell and had to use the shell extensions to hide both the bottom and top bar's so that windowed mode shows me the entire screen.

I am now using 396.24.02 driver and the game plays on the PC from the regular steam client in fullscreen mode without getting the black screen. However, the big picture mode still does not work. Just get black screen and wind up having to reboot the computer. So big picture is still broken with this game. I haven't heard anything from steam support so I assume you have no intention of doing anything about it. just wanted you to be aware.

hamid-elaosta commented 6 years ago

Thanks for the update. Months later and no reply from Feral, and certainly nothing from Steam. I noticed Feral had released a patch, I haven't tried it yet. Also, I read somewhere, something about a policy of non-support for Steam Link from Feral. Also that is is certainly an issue on their end and not Steam Link.

I'm not really sure what the deal is since every other game I have from Feral works flawlessly.

I don't suppose anyone has found a fix for this yet? I am not able to play Rise of the Tomb Raider on the steam link either. I also get a black screen but if I alt-tab I can get it to show one frame of the game on the TV before getting stuck again. The sound is fine. I thought I had fixed this the other day by enabling "Force Full Composition Pipeline" in the nvidia settings, but I think I was just lucky that day because today the only way I can get it to work is to play in windowed mode but it seems to have too much of a delay that way.

af7567 commented 5 years ago

I managed to get this working now reliably (at least, the last 3 times I played it). What I had to do was make sure I disabled compositing (killed compton), start the game in non big picture mode, load my game so i'm not on the menu any more and then turn on the steam link and connect to the PC. If I connect the steam link to the PC before getting into the actual game then it always just shows 1 frame and stops.
