Drag & drop doesn't work in Linux Steam chat #6324

Your system information

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Drag & dropping images from a folder (specifically Nautilus v3.32.1) into a chat window doesn't work in the Linux Steam client. It does work in the Windows Steam client, and it also works in the chat web client on both Windows and Linux (https://steamcommunity.com/chat).

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Save a nice cat picture to ~/Desktop
  2. Open Nautilus (or presumably any other file browser) and browse to Desktop
  3. Open a chat window in the Linux Steam client
  4. Drag the cat picture from Nautilus into the chat window
  5. Nothing happens

If you drag the image into the Steam chat web client, it works. If you repeat this process on Window, it also works.

would like to add this also happens with nemo so its possibly unrelated to file manager

Same issue here. Running latest Mint Mate. Happens with the stock file browser and Nemo. In general the file browser's functionalities seem to be lacking.

AnttiRae commented 4 years ago

Running Arcolinux and drag & drop not working. I tried with Nemo and Thunar file managers no luck with either one. Also the problem does not seem to be limited to pictures. I couldn't drag & drop webm or mp4 files when I tried.

running debian, not working either with dolphin valve pls fix

peymil commented 3 years ago

Still not fixed :(

I'm on Fedora 35 with Gnome DE and the issue still persists. I have installed Steam through RPM Steam repository. Dragging and droping anything to a chat window yields basically nothing as if that window is not there.

Kind of unrelated but also related, this also happens on Windows. I'd imagine it's a platform/API problem.

Baemir commented 2 years ago

Would be nice to see a fix for this eventually...

Not working on Arch Linux with GNOME 41.5 while trying to drag&drop from nautilus.

Linux Mint 21.1 + KDE Plasma, still does not work

hamsdac commented 1 year ago

Same on Arch Linux with KDE Plasma 5.27.4, installed steam via Arch-native pacman repository. Though afaik this has never been possible.

If it's too much of a hassle to integrate drag-and-drop, using portals for the file picker when clicking on the "upload X" button in steam chat would be a huge improvement.

Why even does the "Upload an Image" button open a file picker with the pre-selected filter "File type: Ogg Media File (*.ogv)" anyway? Or maybe I am the only one having that specific issue?
