Audio is glitching/poping/stutter in Big Picture Mode #72

Even with the latest update of Steam I am experiencing sound stutter issue.

Steps to reproduce: Start Steam in Big Picture Mode and have the sound stutter during splash screen video. When I am tring to watch trailers the sound still glitch.

In any other application(ex TF2) i don't have that issue.

I only have this issue with the intro video. Once the intro video has played everything is smooth and peachy.

I tried Far Cry 3 trailer and it isn't smooth. The background ambient sound and click sounds seems to be ok.

Yes, both intro and trailers still stutter for me on Steam stable build.

Yes, sound still doesn't work smoothly for me in big picture mode.

This is still occurring to me, for all sounds played, unless I use ALSA.

Games work fine (e.g half life 2), even when launched via big picture mode. I am using nvidia driver version 313.30 in case that matters. Sound is stuttering everywhere in big picture mode, from the splash screen to trailers. I'm having an other crash/freeze bug, when entering youtube.com in the big picture browser, I'll open a bug right now about that, but it might be related so I'm writing it here. Basically you enter youtube.com, the screen flickers, and then once I got a freeze and twice Steam crashed, and, weirdly, the inner Google Chrome web page processes closed ("He's dead, Jim! page").

I also have these issues. Stutter in video sound and intro. All other apps are stutter free. Increase buffer size maybe?

Hello,

I'm using Steam in Slackware 14.1 x86_64 and the intro and trailer's audio stutters and crackles for me also in Big Picture mode.

I use Alsa in Slack, not pulse...

Any hope on getting this fixed?

I also have same system as Ghost above, and Big Picture the intro and trailers lag and my speakers pop and crackle a little while the sound plays.

I read online this issue has been going on for several years, how sad there is sitll no fix for this.

What can we expect here?

Adding default-fragment-size-msec = 5 to ~/.pulse/daemon.conf seems to fix this issue.

I hope Valve and the developers of this project realize GitHub is a tool where users come and collaborate on a project.

We are not just computer users, we are geeks that can work and help, but if there's not going to be commuincation then how is this going to get fixed?

Two years later Valve doesn't seem to have a fix for this, so what does that tell us?

Well all I can tell you is, here are people with the problem you can try and work with to resolve it, but it doesn't look like anyone cares to resolve this?

PLEASE can we finally work on this and get it resolved?

My sound now behaves much better. The startup water sound is now completely stutter-free (before I had major starvation/stutter all the time). I don't know if this is because I recently got the new PulseAudio 5.0 or if this is an update to Steam itself but it seems to work much better now.

I haven't tested playing any video yet, but there is still a short (like a couple of samples) crackling in the beginning of the water sound when starting Big Picture, but then it plays stutter-free.

Now I no longer have any sound issues once Big Picture is running, again, I said; 'Once'...

When I click the Icon, just as it enters Big Picture I get a slight fuzzy crackle/pop sound, then the audio starts to play ok.

I turned down my system sound and sound in Steam, but I can still here the slight fuzzy crackle/pop...

I'm using Alsa on Slackware with snd_hda_intel

Closing as this appears to have been an issue with older pulseaudio.

If this is an issue with an up to date system and the default-fragment-size-msec = 5 pulseaudio config does not help, then we can investigate further.
