Issue

Big picture mode has stopped loading after installing newest Catalyst Drivers. Clicking big picture mode abruptly exits steam.

I was also having the issue of steam exiting when clicking big picture mode but since the latest ubuntu update steam continues running but no display. The icons and menus are visible in the dash but do not respond and cannot exit. I have to kill the steam process. This happens with single monitor enabled as well.

I can confirm SIGSEGV with AMD 13.2 beta 3 drivers. But when I ran it in gdb (gdb --args bash steam), big picture mode started, but was glitchy (alt-tabbing not working, cursor behaving oddly etc.). Here's an output from GDB run:

I'm having an issue with a seg fault when trying to launch in big picture mode, or trying to switch to that mode.

@two00lbwaster: Seems to be same problem as I have. Try downgrading AMD drivers or don't use Big Picture until AMD releases a fix.

12.04.1 LTS AMD Radeon 4200 series, happens both with the default fglrx package, and the 13.1 update downloaded directly from AMD

The error doesn't seem to be with big picture mode itself, but with how it's launched. I always get a segfault if I try to launch steam straight into big picture mode.

If I click the big picture mode sometimes I get a segfault, but sometimes it just seems to freeze, no graphics at all have to manually kill it.

But if I go to View->Big Picture mode it starts up and works fine, except it leaves a corrupt box on the scren from the menu

@Majkl578 I can't downgrade my drivers as otherwise gaming is off of the cards, as I'm using HD4000 series hardware.

@rekh127 I can confirm this now. I can get big picture mode to work, kind of, by going to View>Big Picture mode.

Once in big picture mode it starts with appalling resolution set. Bumping it up to 1280x720 720p resolution is fine, however, BP mode displays issue #1311 when changing resolutions, after maybe the first change?

Interestingly, now that I have got Big Picture mode working, I can switch in and out of it just fine using any of the three options. If I close Steam, it's back to the same problem.

So, it seems that everything is tied together here.

@rekh127 @Majkl578 do you guys have an issue where you can't get over 9/10 fps?

When exactly? Big Picture is sometimes (not always, at least not now, it seems to be varying) a bit laggy for me, yes, but I don't know how to measure FPS. However games run pretty smooth, 100+ FPS. Additionally, opening BP using View>Big Picture mode segfaults for me as well, but NOT when running under gdb, then it breaks and I am able to get this output & backtrace:

I have already reported two big picture crashes in #1430, which were different than this one. @davidw-valve might be interested and able to say whether it's related to catalyst drivers or not (personally i don't think so).

The AMD Catalyst drivers currently have a bug which is causing Big Picture mode to fail. We are waiting for a fix from AMD, but other than that there's little we can do.

I was able to look at the new crash report, thanks. It looks like something unusual is happening with gethostbyname, so while there's definitely a crash it's in an unexpected place. A future Steam client will handle this case better but I'm not sure why it's happening so more might need to be done.

I have the same issue (but not sure if it has the same hardware cause). As soon as the corresponding button is clicked, Big Picture mode for Steam crashes on Linux Mint Cinnamon.

@Lyxanathall are you able to reproduce this issue with Catalyst 13.10? Also, please catch a CrashID (usually found in the Recent Failure Reports section of the system information) or upload the corresponding .dmp file from /tmp/dumps/ somewhere so that a dev can take a look.

Not quite, as that doesn't give an ID (it would be showing it if the upload worked). As there does appear to be something wrong with your 32-bit OpenGL support you might try figuring out what's going on there and see if that helps.

I am gonna try to install latest amd beta catalyst, if that solves the, not using direct rendering message. ( This has worked before )
I will try again the big picture mode, maybe a couple of times, to see if I get the upload susses-full message.

The crashes are all doing playback of the initial Big Picture movie, so they're a little odd as if it was a common problem nobody would be able to start BP. I'd try with newer AMD drivers.

The not using derect rendering message, is gone. Big picture seems to work, but no sound. It did seem to have created another crash report though.

Because I notice the sound related errors , I started Left for dead 2. Sound works fine in this game. ( game does not run very well though, but that's off topic, allot of stutter still.)

That crash ID is for the bFound assert and isn't good but isn't immediately fatal, so it seems like the driver update has helped you.

I just checked a few vids in the store, ( no big picture mode) no sound there either. So the sound issue does not seem to be big picture mode related.
