[SOLVED] BG language: missing symbols in steam updating-window with non-Ubuntu/Debian Distro #8006

Open deathxxx123 opened 3 years ago

deathxxx123 commented 3 years ago

Your system information

System Info from Steam client: https://gist.github.com/deathxxx123/2882ea57aebca8325bd016180e8b66a2

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

When steam client is updating, when small window with download progress appears, the BG language does not shown correctly in that window, but EN are ok. In steam client all are ok. With Ubuntu all are ok. That is happen with non-Ubuntu distro, and never get fixed or workarounded. I see something not right with strace command:

openat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/share/locale/bg_BG.UTF-8/LC_MESSAGES/bash.mo", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (Няма такъв файл или директория)
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/share/locale/bg_BG.utf8/LC_MESSAGES/bash.mo", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (Няма такъв файл или директория)
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/share/locale/bg_BG/LC_MESSAGES/bash.mo", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (Няма такъв файл или директория)
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/share/locale/bg.UTF-8/LC_MESSAGES/bash.mo", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (Няма такъв файл или директория)
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/share/locale/bg.utf8/LC_MESSAGES/bash.mo", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (Няма такъв файл или директория)

It's missing Bulgarian LC Messages. I check in /usr/locale/share and there are no bash.mo or steam.mo

steam_Bulgarian

EDIT: This problem exist for years, but now i just decide to report, because is not a big issue.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Use Solus or Manjaro distro.
  2. Use Bulgarian language for steam client.
  3. Switch to Beta or Stable or whatever to force the updating-window appear after restarting steam client.
  4. Watch for readable content during update progress.

Hello @deathxxx123, it looks likes Arch's bash package provides /usr/share/locale/bg/LC_MESSAGES/bash.mo, so I'd expect it to be in the same place for Manjaro.

Can you share the output of locale -a? I'm mildly curious if it includes en_US.utf8, and if it doesn't, if adding (or uncommenting) en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8 to /etc/locale.gen, then running locale-gen as root influences your issue.

Yes, there are /usr/share/locale/bg/LC_MESSAGES/bash.mo But don't have the /usr/share/locale/bg/LC_MESSAGES/steam.mo

And the en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8 was commented in /etc/locale.gen I remove the comment and generate locales again. Now i restart steam to test if there are same missing fonts when updating, and problem still exist. I will reboot whole system and test it again.

EDIT: I rebooted whole system and still the same.

There are messegas for steam.mo from command: strace steam:

openat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/share/locale/bg_BG.UTF-8/LC_MESSAGES/steam.mo", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (Няма такъв файл или директория)
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/share/locale/bg_BG.utf8/LC_MESSAGES/steam.mo", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (Няма такъв файл или директория)
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/share/locale/bg_BG/LC_MESSAGES/steam.mo", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (Няма такъв файл или директория)
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/share/locale/bg.UTF-8/LC_MESSAGES/steam.mo", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (Няма такъв файл или директория)
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/share/locale/bg.utf8/LC_MESSAGES/steam.mo", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (Няма такъв файл или директория)
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/share/locale/bg/LC_MESSAGES/steam.mo", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (Няма такъв файл или директория)

This is strace steam output during update window from Pop!_OS 20.04: steam_update https://gist.github.com/deathxxx123/1426f95226a4fe6670da923c6412dda0 It is much short and don't have this type messages in it and all looking good: openat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/share/locale/bg_BG.UTF-8/LC_MESSAGES/steam.mo", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT

deathxxx123 commented 3 years ago

I see that, in this small window fonts are different than fonts in my OS or steam client. So i think this update window exactly is using some other set of fonts that are available for Ubuntu, but missing with any other non-Debian/Ubuntu based distros. If i can find what fonts are using this update window and from where exactly gets this fonts, i can trace what is missing. In steam client fonts look like this: Screenshot from 2021-10-11 22-40-35

I've resolved similar issue on Manjaro Linux with Russian language by installing the following packages xorg-mkfontscale, xorg-fonts-cyrillic, xorg-fonts-misc and restarting PC. Solution was found on Russian Arch forum. изображение

I think it is better to ask OSes' maintainers to make dependency on those packages.

P.S. You can test that window by switching to Steam Beta/Stable channel.

I confirm that is working on Manjaro Linux!!! After install: xorg-fonts-cyrillic xorg-fonts-misc the Bulgarian cyrillic fonts are fixed!

Big thanks adem4ik !!!
