[New Steam UI] Friends UI may freeze after hovering over profile avatars #9408

Your system information

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Interacting with some elements like the mini profile background animation seems to make steam's whole ui freeze up for 10 seconds before it flashes black and restarts itself or closes and reopens. Experiencing this with hardware acceleration on or off.

Short demo: https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/42720874/235253532-13a90fbb-857d-45fb-ab6f-a73a42b25291.mp4

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Open the friends list
  2. Hover over a few avatars until the mini profile animation is displayed
  3. All Steam's windows freeze
  4. After a few seconds it flashes black and restarts itself, sometimes by closing the windows

This has been happening for me for months now.

I could also reproduce it with the above reproduction steps just now, hovering over the small profile picture three times in a row froze the steam friend list UI completely. However it also sometimes happens

The private chat UI is probably also affected by the same issue, because repeating the "alt+tabbing and sending a message" loop a few times tends to eventually freeze it up mid-typing just the same way.

I'm having the same issue on Fedora Workstation 40, Steam just freezes when doing any interaction with Friend List, closing it causes Steam to be stuck for 5-3 seconds, can reproduce anytime, hovering over profiles also causes stutters and sometimes - Steam could just be stuck for a several seconds, also, using any menus in Steam Friend List - also causes freezes

I read in some other github ticket ( can't find which one, sorry ), that this issue is caused by "Enable GPU Accelerated rendering in Web Views" in the Steam settings. And sure enough when I disabled that option the problem instantly went away.

Not sure what exactly is wrong when GPU Acceleration is enabled but at least Steam is consistently usable when it's disabled.
