Roadmap for SteamVR support in Unity 2020 #981

My team wants to use Unity 2020 on our VR project, but as far as I can tell end users must use a beta version of SteamVR with the current implementation of the SteamVR Unity plugin. Clearly, we can't ship a game that requires end users to use a beta version of SteamVR.

So, what is the current roadmap for the SteamVR unity plugin / Unity OpenXR? When can we expect it to be supported by the mainline version of SteamVR? Unity 2020 has had long term support versions out for quite a while now. We're over half way through 2021. Where is the SteamVR support? Where is the updated information? WHERE IS THE ROADMAP? When is it going to be safe for VR developers to start using Unity 2020?

You're really leaving us developers in the dark here. I need to know if my team can use the features of Unity 2020 or if we will have to ship with Unity 2019. This isn't a decision we can just make at the last minute right before ship, and we can't make the decision until we know when to expect full SteamVR support! Please, help Unity VR developers out and give us some information on your plans and when you expect things to happen.

I sort of given up on steamVR for now since I'm using 2021 and focusing on oculus ( via OpenXR ) - not a fan of the oculus SDK but whatever is provided by Unity-XR seems to be enough for my purposes right now ( with the hopes once steamVR+openXR feature appears i wouldn't need to pull out the spine from my game just to implement the controls all over again ). Also I second that , we need a roadmap , as soon as possible , looking at you Gabe 👀

if your app uses the Unity openxr plugin, this should work just fine with SteamVR as well as other conformant runtimes (e.g. ViveOpenXR, WMR, Monado). this is the main idea behind openxr.

Zombieland Headshot Fever for example is a recent release that uses Unity's OpenXR plugin, published in Steam, and works with conformant runtimes including SteamVR: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1296970/Zombieland_VR_Headshot_Fever/

would be nice to know still.... its Jan 2022 and would be nice to use the finger tracking of SteamVR Knuckles.

The SteamVR Unity Plugin is compatible with all currently supported versions of Unity. Unity's OpenXR plugin combined with the WIndows Mixed Reality OpenXR plugins support the finger tracking extension of OpenXR - which Index controllers implement.
