I'd rather merge this whole system into the main branch, since I won't be doing much more work on it until after v0.6.x is released. As this functionality will be in v0.6.x, it must be in the main branch first.
It doesn't completely finish #10 though. More work will be needed, but this exceeds the scope of version 0.6.
