The Crossref API generally provides more complete responses and metadata for publications than the Rxiv and PubMed APIs, so could be useful for increasing the consistency of the metadata we store for saved publications. However, it may be the case that some publications we wish to add do not have an associated DOI- these would need to be handled in a similar way to the current logic.
