git not working or taking in username #94

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.open terminal
2.tell git username
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I see:
error: could not lock config file /Users/(my User)/.gitconfig: File exists

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Mac OSX 10.8.4
newest version of git

Please provide any additional information below.
