Threading issues sounds likely. I'm confused about the workflow. Users are uninstalling, reinstalling and syncing? Or relaunching and syncing?
Are there any logs available in the Apple Developer console? Google's Play console has that, and XCode when connected with a device can view crash logs. Do we have physical access (that someone would be willing to loan us for an hour or two?) to a device that has experienced the problem?

As for the logs, I don't know that we can get logs off the device. But, Steve has a test iPhone that you can borrow if need be. I'm relatively sure we'll be able to recreate the problem as I was having similar problems as well.
Users are reporting that on initial install, the app crashes on sync. At about the third install, it works. My guess: threading issues...
