No specific research could be found around student wait-time for participation, though there was lots of research to be found on wait time for offering quality answers to class questions.

There was research on the average wait time in a very different educational context, i.e. Pierre Dillenbourg's experiment with Lantern - Ambient Awareness - Dillenbourg Lamp Article.pdf

There was also some interesting, and perhaps useful research on Web wait times: Web Wait Time.pdf
