MacUpdate RSS feed – partial download #1730

Vienna only downloads some of the articles in the MacUpdate RSS feed, where as other RSS readers download the entire list. For example, so far today there are 20 entries, but Vienna only shows 5. This behavior started with version 3.8x . Currently testing v. 3.8.8 under macOS X 10.13.6.

I cannot reproduce this (macOS 14.3). For me, all entries are shown.

Burto1 commented 5 months ago

Thanks for checking. Given your result, I resubscribed to the MacUpdate feed, and the full list is now downloaded. Perhaps a settings file was corrupted.

Eitot commented 5 months ago

Perhaps the RSS source file itself was faulty at the time. A refresh may have fixed it.

Burto1 commented 5 months ago

That seems unlikely as I have encountered the same problem when testing different versions of Vienna since October 2022.

Burto1 commented 5 months ago

Furthermore, as I said, other RSS readers did not have this problem.

Burto1 commented 5 months ago

In addition, in several tests I examined the RSS source files and observed that Vienna was skipping several entries.

Please send the feed source file if you encounter this issue again.

I am now noticing similar problems with another feed (Nature Biomedical Engineering). Vienna lists three articles, whereas the feed source file (either Vienna's local storage or online) lists eight. image The source file at the time of the list shown in the image is attached (converted from .xml to .txt as required by GitHub). folder82.txt

Do you have a filter enabled perhaps?

I am not sure what else the cause could be. I have not experienced this issue at all.

No filters — I specifically checked that. I suspect that not everyone who experiences this bug realizes that some articles are missing, because they would have to compare with the source file or website. I haven't yet tried the workaround I used with MacUpdate, which is to separately subscribe to the same feed. I have used Vienna since 2017, and this problem began in 2022 with the release of Vienna v.3.8x. So it may be that there is some legacy setting or data that confuses newer versions of Vienna. Might providing you with copies of a settings file (e.g., "messages.db") before and after subscribing anew be helpful for diagnosis?
