Teacher Wiki #394

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
For the teacher training course (Feb-Mar), we would need a wiki, in which
teachers can share information etc.

Please, can we have a Wiki:
* empty
* rights: only teachers and admins
* in menu perhaps between forums and help

Ron will have a look into it, but will need some help.

I am assuming, we need to copy the wiki module into a new module. Anna suggests
the name should be "Teachers"

I would copy the wiki module, rename it and and rename the model so that it
gets new tables with the same fields etc. but different names.

The views and all that could be the same for the start because the wiki is
after all very generic.

The main changes would be:
- the menu item should only be visible for teachers
- the teacher authorisation is checked in the block before load as usual for
authorisations (e.g. admin module)
- The tables would be empty for a fresh start!

Strix:
I think it would be simpler to add support for namespaces to the wiki, rather
than copy the module. A permission system already exists to limit content by
user role, that's just a matter of adding some default permissions. The wiki
is quite neglected, it needs some work on file uploads and embeds to be really
usable.

a) What is required is not a wiki, but rather the projects module with WYSIWYG
editor.
b) Copy + amend is something that can be done very simply, just amending model
names to avert DB clashes.
Surely that is simpler?

I vote for which ever way and version is simpler and faster to implement. Lukas
needs something for playing around together with the teachers. They can try it
out and give us feedback on if our solution is useful or what needs to be
changed.

Lukas aims to start the teacher training in February.

Strix:
I made something like that for IPNet - so something like the projects module
but editable by all teachers?

Anna:
Would it be possible to share resources as well?

Strix:
You mean like attaching word documents and things? That would be possible, but
may be better to encourage use of the lessons module (add the resources as a
course) if the resources are large files.

Hi Lukas, is that what you have in mind? Please, specify if possible. Thank
you.

Ron:
Please note: when uploading images to a project, a gallery is created that
learners can also see. This functionality would presumably also need to be
changed, if my simple approach is taken.

Ron:
Given all those changes I mentioned, a new module is better. Strix, can you
send me the code for the module you mentioned? I would need to understand that
first.

Anna:
Lukas, when does the teacher training is planned to start? Do you want to start
it first to find out what exactly the teachers need? Or do you want to have
something in place to present to the teachers so that they can find out if it
is useful for their purpose?

Hi everyone. Sorry for my late response.
I'll try to have a first introduction meeting with the teachers end of March
before the first term ends. Due to the fact that the teachers are on holiday
between the terms there is no sense to really start before the second term.
Therefore the wiki doesn't have to be "finished" before the end of April. It
would be nice if there is something to present by then. So they get an idea
what is possible. Since the wiki is one of the few straight advantages for the
teachers it's our bait. ;)

If I understand you correctly you would like to add a wiki module where the
teachers can exchange knowledge but it's not meant for exchanging files?!
In my opinion the provision of files combined with a description of the shared
content is the function to focus on.

Ron, Strix and I had a meeting today. Ron will start working on it now with
some help of Strix so that we can present something in April (13./14.4.) and
discuss it in person.

Ron just mentioned that Strix indicated that he will do the work himself. I
hope that is correct.

Lukas, please, stay in contact with Strix to communicate about the teachers'
needs.

Thank you,
Anna

@awarenetdev and @mrlordsegi

New idea of @ooskapenaar, @McKimi and @amwertlen is to integrate a Moodle to be used as a teacher wiki/CMS. Research underway.

AMWertlen commented 8 years ago

No capacity to develop that now.
