Design data/dataset query menu

The current dataset query menu just allows querying for datasets by template:

This is not very useful.

Other possibilities:

• query for dataset by content: neuron; split, expression pattern, clones
• query for dataset by technique: (FIB-SEM; TEM; confocal)
• query for data by content/technique (results for these queries may be too large?)

Some combination of these (within the limits of what we can achieve with a menu) might be best. All combos are possible as queries.

The other way combinations can be achieved is via refinement of results - the simplest option being refine by text. For this, we need template, content and technique to be displayed in the results table.

The aim of this ticket is to come up with a reasonable combination of queries and refinement to make these queries as useful as possible.

Are the items in this menu still going to be templates? Shouldn't it be datasets? Or would datasets be under each template?

I've updated the description of the menus above to be clearer. The fact that you didn't get them at first suggests They are not clear enough. Can you suggest clearer alternatives?

Are users going to understand/care about the difference between JFRC2 and JRC2018U? Maybe just group as 'all', 'adult brain', 'adult VNS', 'larval CNS' under each category with more specific template info for each dataset in the results list?

I think it would also be useful to have the 'Find all datasets...' description as hover over text for the menu items if this is possible.

I think splits, expression patterns, neurons and clones make sense, but what would be under 'brain regions'? To match other categories, it should find datasets that contain brain regions (maybe painted domains?), but I think maybe you want it to be datasets that contain any entity overlapping a particular region? This could easily have way too many items (regions) under it unless it just prompts users to type a region of interest (which would not have to be limited to the brain). Perhaps rename to 'find datasets by ROI'?

Decision:

• Go with region not templates for queries - TBD - query directly or via template -> part_of.
• results table should have list of templates to which data in that dataset is aligned.
