6 years ago So I've managed to make the problem disappear by reformatting my registration to read this:

gc.collect()

print "Registration failed due to memory corruption. Retrying..."
continue

breakIt seems to be sufficient to avoid crashes (so far), but also hints at some variable in the blockmatching parts of the code not being properly dereferenced. Running the garbage collector explicitly out-of-scope identifies this and frees the memory. Could potential problem causing candidate be c_img_res in blockmatching.py? My attempts to explicitly free this variable makes my code freeze at runtime. Am afraid I don't understand what's going on well enough here.
I have two 512x512 16-bit images I want to register. Attempting this causes an occasional runtime crash outputting something along the lines of
followed by the error message
Some googling suggests this might be due to a failure to free memory from a reused variable, or alternatively from the program running out of memory, in which case it ought to throw an exception.
I'm running this on an 8-core Intel i7, 32 GB desktop computer.
