I am thinking things like having areas that one can go through and then something happens. A rich table is presented with what occurred and things that the player can do.
An example I can think about is that the player meets with bandits. The bandits ask whether the player is willing to pay their toll or wishes to fight them.
Maybe also random chance of meeting with magical beasts that wish to have a conversation with the user?
