Linked to #4, we have to be clear whether "rain" in our spreadsheet is referring to the

precipitation process, thus should be labelled rainfall
the material being precipitated, thus the raindrops that have participated in a rainfall process

Further, @rduerr's comment concerning thresholding should be considered.

rain in the spreadsheet (see below) seemed to the object and not the process, but I think we should be consistent and have concepts to distinguish and relate these. But that does suggest the use of a term like rainfall. "Precipitation in the form of liquid water drops that have diameters greater than 0.5 mm, or, if widely scattered, the drops may be smaller. .....
