I am in vacation for three weeks and a half, so anything regarding the github will have to wait a little I guess.
I've seen your comment on retropie forum (and commented there), but this commit at the moment re-add the metadata to the gamelist every time, it will appear twice, there's actually a small fix I intended to make to check that the metadata for a game is not already in the gamelist before writing it.
The underlying issue (the crash you had) also need to be adressed, that is still write the gamelist correctly in case of an error
Anyway, I'll validate your commit and work on the rest when I come back.
