I made the plotting more flexible by splitting the function in two (one for a single map, one for the whole figure), and adding map extents for the other cases. Examples for how to use the new functions are in the updated plotting_scotland.py.
I agree with both of you. For now I just kept the settings from @chrisweij's original plotting script. The whitespaces could be increased by adjusting figheight in the call.
