@fengelbrecht due to limitations in the DRS structures being used, we'll need to change your entry to:
label = VRESM 1.0
source_id = VRESM-1-0
institution_id = CSIR-CSIRO
release_year = 2016
label_extended = VRESM 1.0 (ACCESS 1.0)
aerosol = Rotstayn
atmosphere = VCAM
atmospheric_chemistry = None
land_ice = None
land_surface = CABLE
ocean = VCOM
ocean_biogeochemistry = PISCES
sea_ice = CSIR-ICE
Is this a suitable amendment?
Please change
label_extended = VRESM 1.0 (ACCESS 1.0)
to
label_extended = VRESM 1.0
Otherwise, the changes are in order, thank you.

@fengelbrecht just to confirm, the label_extended
field can be verbose and allows for the contributor to provide any information that they want to include - for that reason you could amend this as a verbose description of the model configuration/origin/adaptation - it's up to you what it contains.
Thank you Paul (?), I'm new in the business. I thought of adding some details later, but as far as "label-extend" goes, it can be extended to
label_extended = VRESM 1.0 (Variable-resolution Earth System Model 1.0)

@fengelbrecht no problems, these fields can be amended in the future however once data is being written we request that no changes are made.
I'll process the final versions as agreed above
Thank you, much appreciated! I have noted the restrictions on naming conventions once data has been delivered. Will definitely be making some changes over the next coupled of months, in consultation with our partners at CSIRO, as we finalize the model configuration.

@fengelbrecht you should now have VRESM-1-0
listed in the latest source_id file.
Once last clarification that I had, you've listed the ocean model as:
"ocean":"VCOM-1.0 (192 x 192 x 6 C192; 35 levels, z coordinate)",
My intention was to capture what the top model level was in the last entry here - many models have a top grid cell that extends from 0-10 m and is normally reported at 5 m, I wonder what your VCMO-1.0
configuration is?
that's great, thanks Paul!
Yes, we have exactly that conventional set-up. First grid-cell extends from 0-10 m. We solve the hydrostatic Boussinesq equations with a free surface.
So perhaps closer to the description you are looking for is:
"ocean":"VCOM-1.0", (192 x 192 x 6 C192; 35 levels, top grid cell 0-10m)

I will try to answer the questions over the weekend - latest will be on Monday, the 24th.

Hi Paul
Regarding the 6th equest below:
"ocean":"VCOM-1.0 (###192 x 192 x 6 C192, 192 x 192 longitude/latitude###; 35 levels; top grid cell 0-10 m)",}
Does "longitude/latitude refer to the model's native grid, that is, the grid on which it solves its equations? If so, it is not correct, since we use a particular type of cubic grid. Or does it refer to the output grid?
The details are that we are using an equi-angular gnomonic-cubic grid, obtained by projecting a grid set-up on the 6 panels of a cube onto the sphere. The short-way to describe the resolution is "C192". It means that on each of the 35 levels there are 192x192x6 grid points.
We are indeed set-up to provide output on the latitude-longitude grids recommended by CMIP6.
Can you please give me further guidance on how to modify request 6 below? Perhaps "longitude/latitude should be replaced by "equi-angular gnomonic-cubic", unless "longitude/latitude refers to the post-processed outputs.

@fengelbrecht good question, I think we can augment the information to capture all of this. So I have attempted to update the entry that we have below with your provided info, we'll still need the details indicated with ###

@fengelbrecht have you had any luck collecting the information requested above?
Hello,
My name is David Hassell and I am part of the ES-DOC team that is working on CMIP6 documentation. As a part of this process, we need a liaison at CSIR-CSIRO who can act as the interface between the scientists who actually provide the documentation and the ES-DOC team. I was wondering if you are able to help with identifying such a person?
The documentation process has changed considerably since CMIP5 (in response to the feedback that we received), and you can now choose from a variety of documentation methods. Our aim is to train the ES-DOC liaison who can then work with people at CSIR-CSIRO. No specialist knowledge about ES-DOC nor climate modelling is required, but neither would it be a problem, of course. Some institutes have appointed a member of the modelling team, others not.
I would be very grateful f you could let me know by e-mail (david.hassell at ncas.ac.uk) if you have any suggestions.
All the best,
David Hassell

@fengelbrecht great, looking forward to closing this standing issue..
Regarding the atmos description
for in particular, it would be great to augment this so it more explicitly describes the model configuration, so the standing VCAM-1.0 (192 x 192 x 6 C192; 35 levels; top level 35km)
becomes VCAM-1.0 (Cubic-conformal with 6 cube faces 192 x 192 x 6 C192 and high resolution over South Africa??; 35 levels; top level 35km)
or similar
There are other examples found in the CMIP6_source_id.html, some include for BNU-ESM-1-1
the ocean description
is primarily 1deg latitude/longitude, down to 1/3deg within 30deg of the equatorial tropics; 360 x 200 longitude/latitude;
, and in the case of an unstructured or alternative grid, AWI-CM-1-0-HR
includes the following for the model ocean FESOM 1.4
(unstructured grid in the horizontal with 1306775 wet nodes..
@fengelbrecht have you had any luck getting these details finalised?

@fengelbrecht apologies for nagging, but here's yet another ping to send through those final details, thanks!
@fengelbrecht what are the chances that we could update this entry and close out the issue early in 2018?
@fengelbrecht this issue has been open for well over 6 months, and it would be great to get the details updated, finalized and close this issue
@fengelbrecht the partial registration of VRESM-1-0
is causing some problems with our consistency checks. For this reason I plan to de-register this model and close this issue, and we can reopen this issue when the final details are available, and re-register the complete details.
Please do not deregister Paul!
I'll respond tonight - will first need to find those questions again...

@fengelbrecht no problem, I'll wait for new content overnight, but if this is not received by late tomorrow I'll have to proceed with the deregistration so we can fully implement these tests
Hi Paul
Apologies again for the delay with this. Below follows my responses. If some of these are not in the correct format, please let me know and I will respond immediately.

I hope this completes the query! I have specified those nominal resolutions in km, rather than degrees, since the grid is quasi-uniform.
Hi Paul - I'm on standby if you require further information.

@fengelbrecht thanks for this VRESM-1-0
is now registered, please review the details at CMIP6_source_id.html and let me know if any further edits are required.
@durack1 @fengelbrecht at some point the ocean grid description went from a) VCOM-1.0 (192 x 192 x 6 C192
to b) VCOM-1.0 (384 x 384 x 6 C192
Which one is correct? if b) is correct, should you use C384
instead of C192
?
Hi Jean-Yves
Thank you for pointing this out, indeed it looks like an inconsistency that has slipped in. Our scaling analysis indicates that we will be able to run the ocean model at C384 resoltion (6 panels on the cube with 384x384 points per panel projected onto the sphere). This provides about 25 km quasi-uniform resolution in the horizontal to the ocean model VCOM.
So the latest description should be: VCOM-1.0 (384 x 384 x 6 C384).

@fengelbrecht there was some discussion about how a cubic conformal model should be identified, with this discussion found at https://github.com/WCRP-CMIP/CMIP6_CVs/issues/507#issuecomment-378664084 - considering this, did you want to update your identifiers for VRESM-1-0?
Reopening this issue, as some description tweaks are likely required
@fengelbrecht I'll close this due to lack of response. We can always amend these details in the future
