Dear Christian

My name is David Hassell and I am part of the ES-DOC ([https://es-doc.org/]()) team that is working on CMIP6 documentation. As a part of this process, we are looking for a liaison at DWD who can act as the interface between the many scientists who actually provide the documentation and the ES-DOC team.

The documentation process has changed considerably since CMIP5 in response to the feedback that we received. Our aim is to train the ES-DOC liaison who can then work with people at DWD to facilitate the production of documentation for the whole CMIP6 process. No specialist knowledge of ES-DOC or climate modelling is required, but neither would it be a problem, of course. Some institutes have appointed a member of the modelling team, others not.

The model documentation phase will be starting soon, and having a liaison in place should make the process run more smoothly.

I would be very grateful if you could let me know by e-mail (david.hassell at ncas.ac.uk) if you have any suggestions

All the best,

Der David,

we will use the same model as the MPI in Hamburg. Do you still need a contact person from our Institution? If so, please let me know and I will discuss it with the people involved in CMIP6 here at DWD.

Can you please give me some more information on what kind of information/contribution you need for the documentation process?

Best wishes,

Christian

Dear Christian,

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.

Is it the case that you will be producing your own integrations of the MPI model? If so, then some aspects of the simulations that you carry out, and the machine that were run on, will need documenting by the HAMMOZ-Consortium. With regards the model documentation, you either have to do nothing, or a genuinely minimal amount of work resulting from us at ES-DOC copy the MPI model documentation to HAMMOZ-Consortium part of the documentation archive. When I have confirmed which is the case, I shall let you know.

I would say that the most time consuming part of the process is describing the models is largest part of the process, which I think will not apply to you. I Don't want to commit to any numbers (because nobody has done it yet!), but I don't expect describing the conformances (section 4 in https://es-doc.org/cmip6-liaison-checklist) to be too onerous, because we are developing a system that removes any duplication on your part.

If my initial assumption is incorrect then please let me know.

All the best,

David

Hi David,

yes you are right. We will use the MPI model and produce some additional runs. You can use me as contact point. I will either provide the information by myself or forward the requests to the relevant people. When should these information be provided (start of simulation, end of simulation, time or publication, on request)?

Best wishes, Christian

Hi Christian,

This is good news - thank you very much for being the ES-DOC liaison at DWD.

We're still working out the time lines, but the information can be provided as soon as it is known and ES-DOC is ready to receive it, and any time after that. The aim is to create a documentation archive early on, rather than be providing documentation in small quantities for over an open ended period.

We'll let you know as soon as we have a clearer idea of the time scales involved, but there certainly be nothing to do for the next month or two at the least.

Would it be possible to send me an e-mail (address in my original post above) so that I can add you e-mail address to our list?

We look forward to working with you, all the best,

David
