Intent to migrate to Media Working Group #29

Open tidoust opened 1 year ago

tidoust commented 1 year ago

Working group decision to adopt

See results of call for consensus in Media WG (January 2023)

Proposal

The Media Working Group has recently discussed the Audio Focus API again. The proposal is in scope of its charter (listed as a potential normative deliverable). The group refined the proposal, see new explainer in a separate repository.

The group is now ready to adopt the proposal. Note that the intent is not to migrate this repository but rather to migrate the new one and archive this one.

The explainer details goals, use cases, and the currently proposed shape for the API along with code examples. The underlying repository contains an initial list of issues under discussion.

Ongoing technical constraints

What technical constraints will be added to user agents implementing this feature? Better integration and audio-mixing capabilities of websites with native apps, so they can play on top of each other, or play exclusively.

Will this feature be supported in all environments (desktop, mobile, tablets, TV, eBooks, automotive, etc.)? Yes.

Link to implementation experience and demos

The explainer describes situations where this API is needed and includes code samples.

Data

The proposal is in the "close the gap with native" ballpark, fixing cases where developers complained to browser vendors about behavior, e.g. on mobile devices when an audio session gets interrupted by a call. No further quantitative data gathered.

Security and Privacy

To be worked out. No major issue anticipated.

Accessibility

To be worked out. No major issue anticipated.

Internationalization

The proposed API should not have any implication.

The proposal has now been officially adopted as a normative deliverable by the Media Working Group under the name "Audio Session API", see the w3c/audio-session repository.

This WICG repository should be archived. I prepared PR #30 to note the migration and add a link to the new repository.

@yoavweiss, @marcoscaceres, @LJWatson, @cwilso If that looks good to you, could either of you merge the PR and archive the repository, please?

Could the repo owners go over the open issues, close the ones that need closing and move the ones that still need to be addressed to the spec's new home?
