LandBOSSE failing in CI

Purpose

Hello LandBOSSE team! I am seeing LandBOSSE cause some test failures in WISDEM CI, but I cannot replicate it locally. I started with addressing the deprecated syntax warnings and found that I could replicate the problem here. Do you have any insight? It is curious that the problem only occurs in the latest versions of Python (likely because that is where development is happening in the dependent packages)

I finally tracked down the problem to the sum(numeric_only=True) calls, but I am not sure why they are not working.
