New designs for M6 screws by @drayde

Pros: M6 will fit standard (EU) server racks. Cons: M6 screw holes on 6in shelves looks odd Idea: build screw hole customizer.

What screw sizes are normally used? If you want to make it somewhat US and UK friendly then the holes can be set from 1/2-20 clearance which is also a slightly loose M6 clearance which is fine for rack mounting.

We originally started using M4 because....reasons. We've used M4 for shelves, and M5 for "top/hat" shelves that sit on top of the rack.

Standard sizes seem to be "the English 10-32 and 12-24 and the metric M5 and M6". https://www.networkcomputing.com/data-centers/cage-nuts-ultimate-guide/page/0/1

"M5 and M6 are metric rack screws, and you use the bigger screws to hold a heavier load in a server. 10-32 and 12-24 are non metric and tell you how wide the screw plug is and how many complete threads it has from the head of the bolt to the tip. " https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/5jesd7/stupid_question_about_rack_screws/

All of the racks and shelves shipped here within the EU have come with M6.

With the new parametric designs it seems that we *could offer a choice between the 4 in the builder/customizer. Otherwise because "10-32 and M5 are close enough that you might be able to force an M5 bolt into a 10-32 nut", perhaps we should switch to M5 as the default size?

I have normally used M5 on rack systems. I think M5 seems like a sensible standard. If we make the clearances correct for M5 and 10-32, then it can be configurable which physical nuts and bolts you use. I think sticking and m5 bolt into a #10-32 nut isn't great. But if we say get either M5 nuts and bolts or #10-32s. Just don't mix and match?

Side rant
Americans use the therm "English" for ANSI screws that are not the same as the old Imperial screws used in England. You just want to blame your terrible screws on us!
