What I learned about community in over a year of setting up a not-for-profit artist DAO with a zero start up budget (30 minute talk) (Community/NFTs) (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced) #177
A community is a fickle beast. Emotional, passionate, compassionate even. But with the attention span of a two week old puppy constantly seeking instant gratification. Add to this the endless FOMO that fuels the Web3 space. Amplify that with the NFT boom of 2021. Throw in the inherent insecurities of an artist. The constant lure of a "shill space" with that one "whale" collector. That constant news of someone else getting their work collected... Did I mention all the FOMO?
What chance does the emotional call to action of being part of a community of artists out to empower and give voice to all Indian/South Asian creators stand in a state of constant FOMO?
And that too a community that has no money to buy your NFTs like that whale sitting in that twitter space is doing right now.
I am co-founder of the Colours of India DAO. An artist powered DAO that we set up completely through the power of community, with no seed capital, no moneybags benefactors, while navigating Indian laws (yes, we exist as a legal entity in India. We have blazed a sort of trail on that front too) to exist and work in this country, for the benefit of Indian artists in Web 3 and to bridge the information gap between Web 2 and Web 3 through multiple onboarding events, talks, live sessions and much more. We have brought brands like Ariel (Proctor & Gamble) into the NFT space through the launch of their 'Share the Load' NFT collection; Created India's first ever NFT collection for a Tamil movie called Rocky; curated events and exhibitions for multiple organisations, including the Impresario group (Social, Smokehouse Deli etc); Taken point on the campaign against the unfair crypto tax on behalf of the Indian artist community (been featured on multiple news panels on News X and CNBC. We're working on our own white paper & appeals with our in house crypto law firm PANDA Law); and so much more.. all powered by a community of artists... constantly hungry, filled with FOMO and seeking their next sale.
Let's just say the learnings have been incredible. And it has been a hell of a journey.
