Feature abstract menu registration #26

@chrispian I opened this pull request because I'd like to get this work included in the next release. I have some recommended changes I'd like to see so it coincides with the work we're doing in #25.

Overall, I think this is going to be ready to go, but we'll want to restructure things just a little bit so it's consistent with the other elements.
