To select a different notehead, the user can hold down a key, and if it is one which matches the current drum then that notehead will be selected.
For some interfaces this doesn't work at all well: when using over TeamViewer, or with some laptops. It should be a configurable option that a single key press changes the notehead for the next placed note, and a double key press fixes the notehead until Escape (or something) is pressed.
