Error running JG - "vJoy is not running or is incorrectly setup"

As long as I run JG within the first minute of startup, it will startup. However, after this first minute or if I need to restart JG, I get the "vJoy is not running or is incorrectly setup" where JG does not startup. Help please.

Running Win 10 Pro - 64bit, 32 gb ram. I have an XBox controller, 2x Virpil WarBRD bases with Alpha Grips (This also happened before when running 2x ThrustMaster 160000's), a corsair scimitar gaming mouse with iCue customization software (I have turned this off but doesn't help), and a standard HID keyboard.

Any help would be appreciated. When I first installed vJoy, this was not an issue. This was about a year ago. I began getting this error about 6 months ago. I have tried gutting vJoy from my system as well as JG with complete reinstall and get the same issue. About a minute after startup, just after my joysticks are recognized, JG will not startup due to this error.

I have the same problem, vJoy and Joystick Gremlin installed, even disabled the driver signature enforcement during installation. I still get the same error message. I also ask for help or suggestions for solutions. Running Win 10 Pro 64 Bit, 16 GB Ram. You'll have to provide the log file Gremlin generates in %userprofile%/joystick gremlin/system.log and possibly the debug.txt file which will be in the folder where the joystick_gremlin.exe lives. Your devices should not contribute to this particular error but rather something is breaking within vJoy. It might be worth checking what the vJoy configuration tool shows when this error occurs. However, if this actually vJoy failing in some way I have very little in the way of help as I have not delved deeply into its code nor did I ever have many issues with it, and as such very limited experience with fixing it.

and Debug.txt is empty. Keep in mind that I deleted all contents before I tried to reopen JG so that the only logging pasted was of me trying to open JG. I am showing two vJoy devices, which is true. However, this happened when there was only one vJoy device. And as long as I open JG within a minute after a restart (counting the time it takes for me to login to the system) then JG connects to vJoy no problem. After that, JG can no longer see vJoy.

I am also using AutoWhitelister to hide my grips from Star Citizen and have JG set as the white listed application using the "pick" interface.

Oh, and the vJoy configuration tool shows exactly what it always does, two devices set up exactly the same except one has 128 buttons whereas the other has 126. I read on here that if you have two vJoy devices that are set up exactly the same then JG goes wild so I made them different so that JG can see them differently.

Ok so what seems to happen is that for some reason the input library fails to detect your devices after some time. This in turn then means that Gremlin believes that you have no devices connected, especially no vJoy ones, and then just shuts down because it can't work in such a situation.

There are two things I can think of. One is that you have a similar issue to someone else where the input library needed to do things slightly differently to not get confused. The dill.dll file in the zip file can be used to replace the one you have in your Gremlin installation folder. That fixes that particular issue and shouldn't create any issues if it doesn't fix the problem.

The other, and somewhat more likely option, is that the whitelisting breaks things. One thing you can try is to use the 13.3 debug version https://github.com/WhiteMagic/JoystickGremlin/releases/download/Release_13.3_debug/Joystick.Gremlin.R13.3.debug.zip if you aren't already. That has a fix that reorders how things are done in order to prevent issues with the whitelisting. Why the whitelisting would hide vJoy devices though I cannot say. Normally the problem would be that the vJoy devices are seen by Gremlin and just no physical ones unless you replug a physical device.

So, 13.3.debug worked. It was funky at first but did fix the issue. It also takes quite a while to start up. At first I did not think it was starting because it took a couple minutes for the icon to show up in the task bar. Thank you for this! Much better than resetting every time I needed to activate JG. Cheers.

If Gremlin takes a while to start you might have some USB device causing fun. If you try to launch joy.cpl (the windows joystick tool) and that also takes a while to start it's likely a USB device behaving oddly. Windows at times does this to my DAC and I have to tell Windows to stop misbehaving to fix it. Maybe a similar thing causes the problem on your system.

joy.cpl started instantly and showed my two virtual vjoy devices and the xbox controller. I will check out that link you posted though. Also, how do you tell windows to behave? I would love to get this troubleshooted because it is also affecting my shadow gaming service.

@WhiteMagic Now that we got this issue fixed, can you help me fix the issue where JG does not show joystick inputs when using Whitelister? If I remove the grips from whitelister, and uninstall whitelister then do a restart, my button presses from the grips show in JG. However, after whitelisting the grips, their buttons no longer show in JG when pressed. This makes it difficult to configure the grips. Thanks!

If you're using the 13.3 debug version then the most likely reason you might not see devices hidden by HidGuardian is that Gremlin is not launched using admin privileges. The registry keys that need to be mangled to whitelist Gremlin automatically require admin priviledges and thus if Gremlin is launched with normal user permissions it won't whiteliest itself and thus won't be able to see devices.

@WhiteMagic Sorry, I must have worded my question improperly. I run JG in admin and I see my whitelisted grips and bases in the configuration. What I wanted help resolving is that when I actually push a button or manipulate an axis, the equivalent input is not highlighted within the JG interface.

My controllers are working as they show up just fine when selecting "view inputs", just not highlighting in the interface. Makes it difficult to map keys and hats when I do not know which control uses which button or hat or axis.

In your screenshot Gremlin is active and in that configuration it will never swap inputs by design. If Gremlin is not active and still not swapping inputs if you are on the tab of the device you're moving inputs then something is off. The highlight option is intended to make it easier to figure out to which input to add something and I didn't want it to constantly jump around during actual use as it serves no purpose in that situation.
