Hello @siliconhippy,
In Pengwin we have a bundled version of VcXsrv that must be installed via pengwin-setup. But, VcXSrv should not be closing, and there is a risk that the bundled version in pengwin have the same problem if you have something bad in your Windows installation like graphics drivers.
I don't know if GParted will work at all in WSL, first try with parted which is command line and won't require XWindows.
We recommend X410 because it is easier to install and it is well supported, but we don't bundle it with pengwin. X410 offers a free trial, so you can test if it works to you.
Pengwin works without any additional configuration with X410 and VcXSrv and also comes bundled with VcXSrv.
Regards, Carlos
Thanks! I forgot to mention that my laptop is Windows 10 Dell Latitude E7450 with Intel 5300 CPU and 8 GB ddr3 RAM.
Do you know if this has a graphic drivers problem?
The VcXSrv didn't close by itself ! I said that after first time observing xfce4 running, I closed it.
But then VcXSrv came up dark and I just couldn't invoke xfce4.
Do you have a test period?
Will X410 in your opinion support Gparted?

Do you know if this has a graphic drivers problem? Can be anything, you are running an insider version of Windows. I don't see anything bad in your hardware beside that you probably need to tell VcXSrv do not use Windows OpenGL and let WSL use software rendering. Sometimes this fixes things.
The VcXSrv didn't close by itself! I said that after the first time observing xfce4 running, I closed it. xfce4 needs some configuration, look in the closed issues here about how to configure it. But I recommend running directly GParted from the command line instead of launching a full desktop. Also, configure VcXsrv to use Windowed Applications instead of a full desktop.
Do you have a test period? No, but we have a full refund policy via PayPal.
Will X410 in your opinion support Gparted? Probably, also VcXSrv but the problem is not the graphics, is the ability to write directly to the device even in WSL2.
What is happening to you in Ubuntu probably will happen also in Pengwin. I don't want that you buy Pengwin, have the same issues and then place a bad review.
If you have time I can make some tests but in about 7 hours and give you a better recommendation.
Carlos,
That for excellent support ! No I am not going to give you a bad review after this at all !π
Please take your time to do the research.
Is this configuration available in Pengwin?
Is this what you are recommending?

Yes, I can give you the instructions to correctly configure your X Server. But later.
The configuration must be done in the VcXsrv and only on some applications which rely on OpenGL. Once your X server is running, Pengwin transparently will work with it. Pengwin is the best option to run graphical applications and if you acquire it with this purpose you won't regret.
But it won't support GParted now I am sure. Look at this:
From: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/wsl2-faq
And in WSL1 only formatted USB drives are supported.
Regards
Instructions for running GParted or any other graphical application in WSL2:
sudo apt update -y && sudo apt install gparted -y
sudo DISPLAY=$(cat /etc/resolv.conf | grep nameserver | awk '{print $2}'):0 gparted
if it doesn't work, look for your windows ip and type sudo DISPLAY=yourip:0 gparted
You will see GParted running but you won't be able to do anything with it.
Hope it helps
Carlos,
Thanks to you, and Hayden, who replied me separately !
So if I run Gparted + fdisk with your instructions on Pengwin with VcXsrv (or X410), will I be able to compress/partition/resize Linux images saved on my Win10 PC C:\ drive?
A. With dual boot, I used Win32Disk Imager to burn downloaded Linux image on PC hard drive onto USB/SD card (full size.) Then used this SD card/USB to boot my Amlogic TV box, and updated configuration files in memory. Later copied back the new image to SD/USB occupying full size on the device. This full size Linux image I then partitioned/resized from, say 8-16 GB back to 1 GB, with Gparted + fdisk under Ubuntu on my dual boot PC.
(Clonezilla turned out a disaster, wiping out my PC drive, and # dd is basically used by Gparted in a much friendly way !)
B. But if I just copy the new full size image from USB/SD to PC hard drive, can I use Gparted running under Pengwin to partition/resize on hard drive, instead of operating from USB/SD card ?
This way, I can just copy the resized/partitioned image from PC drive back to USB/SD card or upload from PC drive to cloud (Gdrive, Dropbox), for safekeeping and transfer.
Of course this means I need to install some package like Nautilus under Pengwin to access my Win 10 C:\ drive. Using C:\ drive for both Win10 and Pengwin would greatly simplify things.
I like the Pengwin idea so much I want to find a workaround...especially with remote VPS access and other features. Dual boot is a PITA and spending a few extra bucks is definitely worth it !
Cheers, π Shippy.

Yes. This is an example:
dd if=/dev/zero of=usb count=125 bs=1M
sudo losetup /dev/loop0 usb
sudo DISPLAY=yourip:0 gparted /dev/loop0
Your Windows files are in /mnt/c in WSL you don't need to install any file manager for it. But if you still want one, I recommend PCManFM:
sudo apt install pcmanfm
pcmanfm
You can use then pengwin-setup to create shortcuts to your GUI applications in Windows Start Menu
I have tested using Remmina client in Pengwin to be able to connect to remote VNC servers. The opposite I don't know.
Carlos,
Thanks.
I can now proceed with Pengwin in a couple days after I set up my new Plesk Obsidian instance on Lightsail !
I will be happy to provide feedback and a positive review ! Support has been great.
Cheers π Shippy.

Carlos,
OK, so I want to test out Pengwin + VcXsrv (and later X410) on my Dell Latitude E7450 laptop( 8GB DDR3, 5300U CPU) which is already configured for Virtualization/HW acceleration.
I will be buying/downloading from Windows Store.
Can you give me uninstall instructions, so there is no conflict with the new Pengwin + VcXsrv (or X410) setup?
I saw the graphic with OpenGL checked off for VcXsrv config. Is this some kind of issue with E7450 (I guess not)?
Yes. This is an example:
dd if=/dev/zero of=usb count=125 bs=1M sudo losetup /dev/loop0 usb sudo DISPLAY=yourip:0 gparted /dev/loop0
A. Looks like USB access here is working as /dev/loop0 for Gparted + fdisk operations?
B. As I said above, I don't need USB operations, just need to copy resized image from Win10 PC hard drive to USB. I need to confirm this copy part with Pengwin + VcXsrv (or X410) install for subsequent Gparted + fdisk runs.
Thanks !

Hello @siliconhippy,
To have a clean room, but it is not required. This won't interfere in any way. if you want to uninstall VcXSrv just use the uninstaller provided the same for Ubuntu.
The majority of applications will work without problems with any OpenGL configuration. But OpenGL ones sometimes don't work well with Intel Graphics and your laptop probably has Intel Graphics.

Sorry, in the example I showed how it works with image files, not USB
Hi Carlos !
Installed Pengwin on my Dell E7450 laptop (my MS email is atharmian@hotmail.com), went through $ pengwin-setup and updates, rebooted PC, went through MS permissions and got to PC desktop as usual.
I am on Fast Ring so my build on Windows 10 Pro is 18990.1 (28 Sep) on version 1903.
When I click on the Pengwin icon, I get the CLI prompt. Now is there any tutorial link to setup GUI with the default VcXsrv (and X410 later)?
My preference is to invoke Pengwin GUI by default. Then bring up terminal window as needed from the GUI. Do you have xfce4 running here?

Hello @siliconhippy
The documentation is up to date. You are using a single dash instead of two in the commands:
wsl --set-version WLinux 2
You don't need extra steps to configure pengwin with any xserver. But if you are using WSL2 use the instructions that you found in Pengwin.dev
To used GParted, just follow the steps I described before.
I don't recommend you at this stage to deal with xfce4 or any desktop environment. They are tricky and more if you use WSL2. If you want to have direct access to your Linux a GUI applications from the Start menu, run pengwin-setup, choose GUI, and the STARTMENU. It will create the icons. Remember that GParted needs sudo and must be executed from the Pengwin terminal.
If you want to manipulate your Linux file system in a graphical way, execute explorer.exe .
in pengwin.

Hey Carlos,
Need a fresh start...
Hi again after a while ! I bought Pengwin from MS Store a while ago, and yesterday updated my Win Pro laptop Dell Latitude E7450 to Win 10 Pro 2004 19041.264 Build 2020.06.08.6246211.
Then I installed pengwin, ran pengwin-setup, and added many packages including OpenSSH and VcXsrv, but could not get the GUI. Then I followed the section "Installing Graphical Apps" from here:
https://seanthegeek.net/234/graphical-linux-applications-bash-ubuntu-windows/
So I also installed VcXsrv on Windows with the icon but still no GUI !
So:
Can you give me uninstall and re-install instructions so I can start over? I want to run VcXsrv if possible for local view. Kindly advise.
Any particular instructions for x410 install? Right now I have a MS Store payments issue ( Canada paypal but old US address) which I will fix over time.
Thanks !
Shippy.

Hello,
You did it right, you don't need any further configuration. Just install the GUI application that you wish to use via apt. For example to use gedit:
sudo apt install gedit
gedit
If you want its icon to be added to the start menu just run pengwin-setup->GUI->STARMENU
And undo what you did following the instructions in the website, especially:
echo "export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0" >> ~/.bashrc
Delete this line, pengwin make it automatically for you.

Carlos,
Thanks. Please see the support email I sent Choung from X410:
It seems that my GUI problem isn't solved yet. I did uninstall VcXsrv from $ pengwin-setup menu, and also installed and uninstalled x410 a couple of times.
See my first email.
Installed Pengwin with pengwin-setup on my Latitude E7450 laptop running Win 10 Pro 2004 19041.264 Build 2020.06.08.6246211. All pengwin installs went fine, including VcXsrv and integrated WSL2 menus with Windows.
So I downloaded trial X410 and went through this:
https://x410.dev/cookbook/wsl/using-x410-with-wsl2/
But I get the following error:

silicon@DESKTOP-VDKIRMJ:~$ echo $DISPLAY

Please helpβ¦is pengwin install of VcXsrv a problem here? I uninstalled VcXsrv from Win10 and rebooted before installing X410, and allowed Public + private firewall access as instructed in Win Defender menu.
After above, searching online:
I setup x410 configuration via $pengwin-setup. But when I run $startxfce4 it says there is a x server already running, and cannot run on DISPLAY 0.0...
I get above error even though VcXsrv is uninstalled from both Windows and Pengwin, and I tested with both x410 installed and uninstalled !
echo "export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0" >> ~/.bashrc
Btw, I found some xfce4 autosart script online, but when I do $nano .bash_profile/.bashrc and paste the code, try to save by CtrlO, I get an error "no such file or directory."
I need instructions for creating a Windows batch file for pengwin just as there are x410 instructions for wsl2 to create for ubuntu18.04.

Regards

What's happens when you execute a graphical application?
I have not tried a graphical app. I want to run xfce4- if this runs then I shouldn't have other issues?

Install xfce4:
sudo apt-install xfce4 xfce4-terminal gnome-icon-theme
xfce4-session
For the start menu tell pengwin-setup to generate the start menu shortcuts: pengwin-setup->GUI->STARTMENU
If you want the full desktop tell X410 to do a floating desktop:
Hi again Carlos !
Maybe this is the problem...big miss on my part !
I am using an external display (32 inch TV set with 720p), not the display of my Dell E7450 laptop.
What configuration do I need for an external display as above?

I didn't see another avenue so asking here:
I am on Fast Ring with Build 18985.1 and tried , with online instructions, Ubuntu 18.04 from MS Store with VcSrv. VcXrv loaded first time but didn't again after closing once !
So I want to try out Pengwin, specifically using gparted with fdisk since I need some USB disk partition/shrink of Linux images that are modified.
Will Pengwin do the job? Does it have installers for VcXsrv and X410 packaged?
