Analysis failing to complete on stream that flows through Cornell University campus #3597

A user reported a strange gap in the model in Ithaca, NY. We have been able to replicate her issue using the coordinates below. I delineated an adjacent watershed and it was able to analyze properly. It's affecting a small area but since I've never had a report of a "missing" watershed, I thought I should pass it on.

"I have been experimenting with the Model My Watershed App and having good luck pulling up stream, land, soil, terrain...etc data for watersheds in Tompkins County, NY where we do biological monitoring through the Community Science Institute. It works for every stream i try to delineate EXCEPT a creek called Cascadilla Creek in Ithaca, NY.

Here are the coordinates of one of the biological monitoring locations that i have tried: 42.445115, -76.499696. It will delineate the watershed on the map but it never pulls up any data. Since this stream flows through Cornell University, at first i thought that there was perhaps more data than for other streams and it might take longer than usual, but even after waiting over an hour it never stops processing. Is this a glitch in the system or is there some other reason that i'm unable to pull up data for this stream?"

Curious. I tried the three HUC-12s near Cascadilla Creek in Ithaca, NY and they did finish correctly. It could be an issue with the shape generated by the delineation code.

Even though the analysis doesn't finish, they should still be able to download the generated shape. If they can add that shape here, we can take a look.

Thank you! My attempt to download a shapefile yielded an error message ["Area of interest is invalid: Ring Self-intersection[-76.391554 42.417984]"] but GeoJSON worked. Ithaca Continental US Medium Resolution.zip

Thanks! I think that error message may be a clue to the problem: the generated shape is invalid. I haven't delved into the RWD code, and with the lack of funds I doubt I'll be able to look into this much more.

Thanks for looking into this a bit, Rajadain. I'm sad to hear that there's not funding to fully support the App. I was excited about teaching volunteers with our not-for-profit water monitoring organization to use it in conjunction with our water quality database to start using our long-term volunteer-generated data sets to look at relationships between land use and water quality. Unfortunately the missing creek is one that we have some concerns about. Do let me know if you think there's any small gesture i could make that might help get you all more support.

If you can generate a shape for that creek any other way, the app does allow you to import a Shapefile or GeoJSON. That's the easiest workaround I can think of.

Thanks. Unfortunately i'm pretty illiterate when it comes to GIS and was looking for a way for our volunteers to easily pull up land use data. We're definitely grateful the tool exists for all of the other watersheds we work with!

Thanks again, Adrianna

We've had another user report the same issue for a watershed in Maine, delineating from 43.496972, -70.475307. Dave Arscott replicated the issue and reported, "I did a rough 'free draw' around the area and it worked, but the delineate tool did not."

Adrianna-CSI commented 1 year ago

Hi Heather, Thanks for sharing this. We'll have to try again using "free draw." All the Best, Adrianna
