can we do something about the animal feed? chickens can and will eat pretty much any vegetable matter, so putting crops other than grain in a chicken trough should be an option. I don't think hay should be used as chicken feed exclusively, but could maybe be part of a chicken fodder recipe. but grain only is a poor and prohibitive choice in my opinion, especially as you can feed grass only and dry mash to the larger animals.

further idea: chop and dry root vegetables in an oven to increase shelf life(bear with me). chop and dry mushrooms in an oven to increase shelf life. combine these items with dry berries and grass.

2 of each would produce 1 unit of animal feed. since all the ingredients except the grass are already dried, this could be stockpiled for winter use, although the root vegies and mushrooms are already long-lasting in the proper containers. this would be the numerical equivalent of putting 8 grass in a trough as 1 unit of animal and chicken feed.
