That seems very good! We should test it out first by hand, but I don't have a music box player. Maybe @Wintergatan2000 can manually cut it and test it?
Great idea. The only problem is the paper/card needs to be as flat and smooth as possible to correctly go through the music box meachnism. Any edges or double-thicknesses cause jams and possibly mis-fired notes. I have a player and even thick tape can cause a problem
Since we have the precision of the laser cutter, we can use more complex and stronger joints. For example:
The music boxes does not allow for any overlay of the paper or any doubling of the layers. I think a stronger sawtooth joint pattern in a diagonal could be interesting but also cause problems if individual teeth flake off.
The music boxes does not allow for any overlay of the paper or any doubling of the layers.
So ok, to keep it simple i think that a slight modification to the diagonal cut we have seen in the videos, is enough. I attach an idea: with this shape we avoid the possibility of a vertical shift.
Obviously we will still need the tape to joint it :)
Something like that might be perfect! It is self aligning and strong, easy to assemble and tape.
I'd be inclined to give the end user the choice of joining geometry. Suggested geometries could be included but it would be fairly easy to allow a user to 'draw' their own. And of course there will be the case where no join is wanted.
I understand we are pirmarily motivated to provide a solution for Martin and his specific requirements but creating something that others can make use of and is as flexible as possible without being overly complicated would be my preference.
+1 on that. Firstly I would focus on the base project. We can then expand for more useability.
Hi!
With the lasercutter, in the Fablab, we cut almost always Wood or PMMA, studying ways to join parts, create puzzles and coupling.
But the paper strips, in my opinion, are sufficiently thin to simply link them by a "hook" threaded inside a small slot... I attach an example!
