This PR makes the following changes:

Ensure that all code lines are shorter than 72 characters. This prevents overflows of the typeset code in the technical documentation.
Add pseudo-target check-line-length to Makefile.
Add checking of line length to continuous integration.
Update CHANGES.md.

This PR also makes the following changes:

Add pseudo-target check-tabs-and-spaces to Makefile.
Fix the definition of \markdownInput with frozenCache enabled.
