Application currently crashes on startup if maps directory does not exist in cwd

The compression code there really shouldn't be needed, that was just testing mess. Usually map files come via ImageDirectory module from extension, and when ImageDir writes to disk it automatically compresses.

At least I don't have to be alarmed that my CI builds didn't start anymore 😄
