Accepting request to make the Perl more modern? #3

I read through your script and noticed a few Perlisms that are a bit dated. I'm willing to clean it up and submit a pull request if you are open to such work. Interested?

Most definitely. And if you wanted to add any other cool stuff while you're in there I'm happy to take a look at that too :)

Oh, I should probably say that I prefer to rely on modules bundled with standard Perl on say Ubuntu 10.04. Just to make life easier on the users.
