Can I adjust the size of photos uploaded from the app?

To better manage your site storage, as well as the image load times for your site, it is recommended that you adjust the overall width of the images you upload. To do this, go to the Me section > App Settings.

In the Android app, toggle on the option Optimize Images, then click on Maximum Image Size so you can choose the maximum size option:

On the iOS app, you can choose the Max Image Upload Size option.

Can’t access photos on my device

On iOS

When you first use the WordPress for iOS app and try to add a photo you’ll see this prompt:

If you tap “Don’t Allow” though it prevents the app from accessing your photos in the future. If you accidentally did that and are not able to upload photos in the WordPress for iOS app you might see this error displayed:

To fix that, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Find the “WordPress” app
  3. Slide the toggle next to Camera
  4. Then click on Photos to change the permission of what the app can access

Now when you next go to add an image to a post or page you’ll have access to the photos on your device.

On Android

When you first use the WordPress for Android app and try to add a photo you’ll see this prompt:

If you tap “Deny” though it prevents the app from accessing your photos in the future. If you accidentally did that and are not able to upload photos in the WordPress for Android app you might see this error displayed:

You can click on Edit Permissions and it will take you to the App settings. From there you can click on Permissions:

And select what you would like to give permission for the app to access: Camera, Files and Media, etc. Once you click on the option you will be taken to the screen where you can change the permission:

How to set a Featured Image

There are two ways to set a featured image in the mobile apps, via the Post Settings panel or directly from an image block’s settings.

Post Settings

On iOS

From the app dashboard, click on Blog Posts or Site Pages and select either the page or the post you want to add a featured image to. Once you have the page or the post open, you can click on the ellipse menu at the top-right corner of the screen and then on Post Settings.

Then, tap on the Set Featured Image tab.

If this is the first time you are doing it, the app will ask you for permission to access your media library. Select the option you want and after that you will see the images from your device.

On Android

From the app dashboard, click on Blog Posts or Site Pages and select either the page or the post you want to add a featured image to. Once you have the page or the post open, you can click on the ellipse menu at the top-right corner of the screen and then on Post Settings.

Then, tap on the Set Featured Image button.

If this is the first time you are doing it, the app will ask you for permission to access your media library. Select the option you want and after that you will see the images from your device.

Image Block

It’s also possible to set any image as featured directly from the post editor if the image has been added to the editor via the image block.

To set an image as featured via the image block, tap on the block and then tap the cog icon to access the block’s settings. Here, you’ll find a Set as Featured button that can be tapped to set the image as featured.

After the image has been set as featured, a temporary confirmation notice will display at the top of the screen and a new Featured banner will overlay the block.

It’s also possible to remove an image as featured via the image block’s settings.

I can’t upload photos/videos, I get a “Failed” error message. What do I need to do?

There are a few possibilities, and the specific error message will tell you more:

Do you see a message about your Jetpack connection?

If so, run your site through the Jetpack Debug tool and see if there are error messages. Follow the troubleshooting tips there to get Jetpack reconnected on your site, and that should resolve the error.

Did the WordPress App begin upload and then provide a ‘Failed’ message?

Try uploading a smaller image size. Also, check that your device has enough storage space available (we recommend at least 1GB of free space)

Something else?
